Our 23/24 Sustaining Choices programme (Planning Aid Scotland) has just wrapped up 👏 Well done to communities in the North Berwick Coastal Ward, Glenfarg and the surrounding area, and North Cathcart Road who developed Active and Sustainable Travel Action Plans for their places. These plans will be excellent tools for generating ideas and advocating for resources, in order to improve moving around. Thanks to Paths for All for supporting through the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places fund. 🤔 What's next? We are fortunate to have some further funding from Smarter Choices, Smarter Places fund to further evolve the programme. While we are just in the early stages of planning, I would love to connect with organisations/groups who would like to explore creating a Local Walking Plan for their place. We are also keen to not only produce a report, but other resources as well. Perhaps a film, zine, giant poster?! In this round of Sustaining Choices, we are focussing on walking. We want to work with communities to explore what walking is like in your place and how it could be better. There will be a big focus on creative engagement techniques and reaching out to a broad range of people. So this should be a lot of fun. 🚶♀️ 🎭 🎉 We are currently looking to connect with communities who have the most to gain from being able to walk more. This might mean your place could be at significant risk from the impacts of climate change, an area considered to be of high deprivation (according to the SIMD), or have physical/environmental barriers which prevent access to walking. 📧 Get in touch to find out more: erin@pas.org.uk (Pictured is Brett, our project lead in the North Berwick Coastal Ward showing, their action plan to a member of the public)

CWDM’s budget guided by dignity, economic growth, and safety The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) has presented a R503,9 million budget that includes R127,2 million for capital projects – emphasising dignity, economic growth and safety. Mayor Ald (Dr) Elna von Schlicht assured that the budget is credible and focused on meeting basic needs, stimulating economic growth, and enhancing public safety. Key allocations include over 23% for social development projects, such as ECD support and sanitary towel distribution, and funds for safety and environmental health projects, including a safe passage sidewalk for the visually impaired and road safety initiatives. Furthermore, R800 000 is allocated to the Community Safety Implementation Plan. Economic growth and tourism are also prioritised, with 20% of the budget allocated to local economic development and 8% to EPWP projects. The recent Winelands Autumn Expo was attended by over 2 000 visitors and highlighted local tourism and products – plans are in place for the annual subsidisation of this event. The budget aims to rekindle hope, ensure equal opportunities, create jobs, and foster safer communities. You can read the full press release on our website: https://lnkd.in/dW9-arxU

Alberta’s government is seeking input on regulations for the Bistcho Lake and Cold Lake sub-regional plans to support caribou recovery and create jobs in Northern Alberta. Albertans’ input will help make sure that these regulations are implementing the sub-regional plans as effectively and efficiently as possible. The Cold Lake and Bistcho Lake sub-regional plans are the first two of 11 sub-regional plans covering 15 caribou ranges in Alberta, which enable caribou recovery while also supporting a broad range of land uses and values including conservation, Indigenous traditional use, recreation and economic development in these sub-regions. Public engagement will run until June 6. This feedback will be considered before finalizing the regulations and incorporating them in the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan.
