We have been noodling with some of the top marketers in the country over the past few months. Insights abound in this great piece by Jason Cieslak. Every organization is looking at AI, whether casually playing around or aggressively applying it to reduce costs. While there are wild swings in the tools and appropriate applications, all attendees agreed that the speed at which AI is improving is profound."

Competition was not taught to be a friendly activity when I was a youngster... Even when I was on teams that valued good sportsmanship, we tended to get more fired up to beat someone else instead of getting fired up to win for ourselves. "Us against them" fueled us. Were we insecure? Need an enemy to get pumped up to do our best? Probably both. As a "grown up" ( 😉 ), I had an amazing lesson on what healthy competition looks like from Jim Hickman + Larry Cuddy, Jr. + Chris Zimmerman + Dennis Lane What they did: 🔹 They sold very similar software (TMS) to the same groups of people (intermodal carriers). 🔹If their customer wanted to leave and go to one of the other systems that better suited their business needs, these men weren't petty; their teams worked together to make the experience great for the customer. 🔹 When they hosted customer conferences, they invited one another, unafraid of "sniping" customers or stealing ideas. 🔹 When they had ideas or put on a think tank, they included one another to get more perspectives on important topics. The impact of their actions: 🔹 Their friendly #competition pushed them to innovate to keep their customers happy with the best product they could build. 🔹 The #respect they had for their customers and each other was admirable and created a sense of #community -- even their customers (who may have been competitors) were willing to share best practices and ideas to improve the industry! 🔹 Their examples of strong, kind, confident #leadership made it so their team members respected the "competition" as well, freeing them up to focus on #winning by doing their best, not by trying to tear others down. People seem to like my complaints more than my optimism here. Well there is no lack of things to complain about in #cpg so, I can keep this going for the next year... likely all of eternity 👹 When I first was starting out many years ago, (look how excited I was at my 2nd consumer show...) And yes, I printed and taped a logo on my T-shirt, times were tough. Anywho, I was glued to industry content. Mostly because I did not come from corporate cpg like many founders and I just love packaged goods and innovation. Also, a part of me was thinking, if I just studied these companies more, just absorbed as much as I could from these pioneers, went to Expo West, gained the respect of these industry news outlets, I too could maybe hope to "make it" one day. Well that was dumb. These reporters are not the gatekeepers to success. They are not gatekeepers to investors, retailers, or most importantly, the consumers. The most hyped companies have the same risk of failure (possibly more) and consumers are not reading our industry news. In fact, sometimes, as an industry it seems we can all get so caught up in our own excrement (myself included) that we sometimes fail to come up for air to realize the rest of the "real world" doesn't give a rat's a*s about that new low GI starch, or new flavour compound, or new anything. Pop Tarts, chocolate pb flavoured anything, Oreos and Coke are all still doing very well indeed. You can build a super successful company without ever being written about, ever. Or, conversely you can do everything that seems important to the industry, be the most perfect and align with the industry's "standards" and still never be written about, ever, or be liked by a consumer ever... :( We seem to be sold these steps that we have to do. Pay for this $30k tradeshow, here pay to apply for this award, here pay for this "start-up" program, etc. It’s just constant. Just a reminder, none of that matters at all and I wish I learned that much earlier on. Maybe that comes from my years of ballet where I feel I need approval from outsiders 🤷♀️ . Enough about me... Nonetheless, as an industry, if we truly wanted to foster the next generation of passionate food entrepreneurs making meaningful change, we would celebrate more of the mundane things, more realistic things and stop gouging these poor up-starts. Food is already unsexy enough as a career path. 7/10 of the lowest paid jobs are in food.
