2024 Semiconductor Summer Camp in Taiwan My friend Michael who lived in Arizona has done a wonderful thing for the young talents from Arizona and around the U.S. 31 students have completed 13 days of Semiconductor training workshop. I really envy these students who have the opportunity to learn and make semiconductor at this young age. 10 years from now, some of them may join the ecosystem of Semiconductor. 20 years from now, one of them may be the Semiconductor industry leader. I told them "Treat your classmates well because theny may be billionaires:)". Next year, there will be more students join this program. On Friday, I had the opportunity to present a poster on my applied project in Technological University Dublin. I presented a poster that summarised my first 6000 words which I have completed and what work is yet to come. My applied project is titled: The resource-based view on the competitiveness of a company: A case study on Apple. I have chosen the resource based view of Apple because it is a brand known for its unique resources and capabilities. I am going to explore how Apple uses this theory to gain a sustained competitive advantage in the technology industry.

In Taiwan, Renesas sponsored the 8th Annual Innovation Tech Challenges this summer, which provided an opportunity for students to develop practical solutions using AI and cloud computing. More than 100 teams registered from 29 schools! Ahead of the challenge, Renesas Senior Field Applications Engineer, Steven Lee, participated in technical workshops at National Cheng Kung University where he provided onsite technical consultations to students. Renesas senior leaders and field application engineers served as judges. Students were scored on their innovation, technical depth, integration of software and hardware and presentation skills. Three of the teams that headed to the final competition used Renesas modules. One of these teams, made up of students from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology, even took home the third-place prize. Yesterday, during a mentorship session via ADPList, I met with someone eager to transition into tech, yet they felt hesitant because their background is in biology. To inspire them, I shared the story of Samsung, illustrating how diverse beginnings can lead to success in unexpected fields. When we think of "innovation," it is often linked to specific companies or countries. However, innovation is really about embracing growth and change—elements that are both constant and often spontaneous in our lives. Originally a grocery trading company, it took Samsung 31 years to pivot into the electronics space. Today, they are leaders in a wide array of consumer and industrial electronics, including appliances, digital media devices, semiconductors, memory chips, and integrated systems, making them one of the most recognizable names in technology. I recently came across an infographic detailing Samsung's R&D budget, and it truly wowed me—it also reminded me of Samsung's humble beginnings, which was far from electronics. TL;DR: Start anywhere, with anything. You'll figure it out as you grow. Start afraid, you'll find people that will hold your hand as you go.

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has secured $1.5 million in federal funding through the CHIPS Act of 2022 to expand its semiconductor and microelectronics workforce. The initiative, known as BRIDGE (Broadening Research and Inter-Disciplinary Graduate Education), aims to increase RIT’s semiconductor program graduates from 90 to 555 annually over the next two years. BRIDGE offers new opportunities for students from various STEM fields, providing pathways into the semiconductor industry. According to RIT's associate professor Parsian Mohseni, graduates often secure starting salaries of $90,000 with signing bonuses, and the program boasts a 100% job placement rate. This initiative comes amid a global shortage of semiconductor workers, with companies like Micron Technology and TOKYO ELECTRON LIMITED seeking talent for thousands of new positions. RIT’s focus on practical, hands-on experience makes its graduates highly sought after by employers, including roles that don’t require a bachelor’s degree. One student confided that he had just switched to her major; another asked her about obscure matters like a "clock tree," a #hardware design circuitry concept -- something she had never encountered when she was a #student. A lot has changed in the five years between Guong's graduation and her current position as senior engineer for physical design at U.S. chip developer Marvell Technology. Now, fresh-faced Vietnamese students are jumping into #semiconductors, and the government has a target of training at least 50,000 #chip engineers and designers by 2030. Samsung Display is expanding its 'Display Track,' opening avenues for future talents to shine brightly! Samsung Display is expanding its 'Display Track,' a talent development program that provides specialized display education, scholarships, and guaranteed employment post-graduation. The program was active in 3 major universities in Korea last year, meanwhile the recent expansion will see the program now active in 8 universities(Seoul National University, KAIST, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Korea University, Yonsei University, Sogang University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Hanyang University). The program will be selecting approximately 70 students from these universities, providing them with a perfect opportunity to become a professional in the display industry. Did Apple just kill the #microLED industry? WHAT HAPPENED? After spending more than $3 billion to develop the #technology, Apple pulls the plug on microLED. It was business as usual last Monday at Apple’s microLED team. Meetings with suppliers, placing orders for consumables, running tests and experiments in the labs and pilot lines, checking on progress at OSRAM’s new 200 mm microLED fab, etc. But then the axe fell… On Tuesday, hundreds of people, Yole Group believes essentially the entire microLED team of more than 350 people, were laid off. Osram, who had just completed a more than $1 billion fab in #Malaysia (known as “Kulim 2”) to meet Apple’s needs for the project, received the news from Apple that the project was canceled. Eric Virey : "At Yole Group, we estimate that at this point, Apple had spent more than $2.6B to develop microLED displays, to which one must add $420M for the acquisition of Luxvue in 2014. Apple’s partners, including LG Electronics, Osram, and Kulicke & Soffa, had already spent close to $1.3B to start ramping up #manufacturing for the first microLED Apple watch in 2026.
