Europe stands at a critical juncture. Achieving leadership in both digital and energy transformations requires a systematic economic overhaul. The good news is that the journey to net zero and economic growth are not mutually exclusive; they go hand in hand. Recently, at EIT InnoEnergy’s #TBB2024 in Barcelona, I had the honor of delivering the keynote speech to Europe’s foremost business and sustainability leaders who are addressing the challenge of reshaping the energy landscape while enhancing Europe’s competitiveness. Europe faces the risk of lagging behind in innovation and technology development and is confronted with a shortage of green skills. By 2030, we will need over 1 million solar workers to meet our renewable energy targets. During my panel with Benoit Lemaignan from Verkor, Lucas Aranguena from Santander, and Alessandro Izzo from European Investment Bank (EIB), we delved into how Europe can rise to the challenge by nurturing industrial unicorns to foster innovation and growth. I’m proud that SE Ventures, the venture capital fund supported by Schneider Electric, is also paving the way for climate tech and industrial tech startups globally, with over $1 billion in committed capital and nearly 40 active portfolio companies across Europe, North America & APAC. By nurturing this sustainable ecosystem, we can magnify the positive impact on the planet and the economy. Together, we can forge a more sustainable and competitive Europe. 🌍 Belgium is Making Waves in Green Tech! 🌱 This week in Brussels, the first-ever GreenTech Forum Brussels was organized. The number of participants clearly showed the high demand and eagerness for discussions on this critical subject.! 🌐 The urgency to address climate change is no discussion. Did you know the ICT sector is responsible for about 4% of global CO2 emissions, on par with the aviation industry? Now more than ever, it's crucial to adopt sustainable IT practices and embrace green coding. The digital sector has a unique dual role: reducing its own environmental footprint while driving the ecological transition across other industries. #PainSurLaPlanche 🌟 The forum was an eye- and brain opener and I have been inspired by all the conversation I have had!  Over two days, we delved into the complexities and varied solutions of this pressing issue. From inspiring talks to the latest innovations, industry leaders, research experts, and pioneers shared their insights. It was also an excellent opportunity to network with companies, startups, and field experts. Collaboration is the key to a greener future, and it really felt we were advancing together. 🇫🇷🇳🇱 It was fantastic to see strong representation from French and Dutch tech communities, underscoring the power of cross-border collaboration for the greater good. 🙏 Thank you to the Belgian Institute for Sustainable IT asbl/vzw - for an excellent first event! 🌟 Reflecting on Our Time at the Innovation Zero Conference 🌟 The Future We Want team attended the Innovation Zero Conference last week and we have some reflections.... 🍌 Sponsorship Controversy: It's disheartening to see much of the LinkedIn narrative focusing on the headline sponsor, BP, who seemingly slipped in at the last moment. The irony and discomfort of having BP, a fossil fuel giant, sponsor a conference centred around green technology and sustainability, were not lost on us. This lack of clarity and poor communication to attendees and exhibitors around sponsorship was a bitter pill to swallow and something we weren't even aware of when we signed up. It's really important there is transparency in such partnerships as attendees deserve to know who the key sponsors are to make informed decisions about their participation. 🍌 Pragmatic Approach: This brings us onto our next reflection... we are a #smallbusiness. Therefore we approach all opportunities with pragmatism. We don't hate ourselves for going. The conference provided invaluable insights and connections that we otherwise wouldn't have accessed. 🍌 Would We Commit Again?: Absolutely. Our experience was overwhelmingly positive. We established meaningful connections, gained invaluable insights for customer development, and engaged in enriching knowledge exchanges that are already starting to shape our future plans! Sometimes the path forward isn't always black and white - especially in business and sustainability. However, seizing opportunities amidst complexity is vital for us. It allows us to further our mission of spreading climate education and creating #meaningfulconversations.
