I’m trying something new. Once a week I’ll share a selection of news from the English language learning, teaching, assessment and international education world which may be of interest to marketing professionals within the industry. I may also start adding other updates - such as changes to social media platforms or things like that if that would be useful (don't worry I won't mention the TikTok ban). Here goes Week 1: 18/1 - 25/1. - Duo hits the red carpet at the premier of 'English' - a broadway show about a group of students preparing to take #TOEFL. Sponsors #DuolingoEnglishTest gave away hundreds of tickets for students to go and see the play. #PearsonLanguages launch AI powered Digital Language Tutor to help employees speak with confidence at work. Learners can improve their English via role plays, real-life conversations and tailored feedback. #MacmillanEducation announce their annual global teachers festival with 21 webinars delivered between 10th-21st February. Keep an eye our on their YouTube channel for the recordings after the event. #Kazakhstan showcase the country's development as a regional academic hub at #BettUK2025. Their evolving educational ecosystem has sparked growing interest in learning opportunities, with around 30,000 international students currently studying in the country. One to keep an eye on as the big four study destinations lose their appeal. #TheBritishCouncil have opened applications for their Women in #STEM scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic year. Successful applicants will benefit from access to a postgraduate course at a UK university, economic support and English language support with the cost of their #IELTS test being reimbursed. Last Friday, we had the opportunity to engage with Support Teachers, Heads of Department, and Education Officers for Digital Literacy at the Department of Traversal Skills. Our discussion focused on the CThink IT board game—an unplugged board game designed to introduce Computational Thinking skills to children aged 4 to 8 years. As part of the Erasmus+ project (2022-1-MT01-KA220-SCH-000086903), the CThink IT game and accompanying resources are available in English, Maltese, Greek, and Portuguese, ensuring accessibility across different linguistic and cultural contexts. The board game has been carefully designed to make problem-solving, logic, and algorithmic thinking fun and engaging for young minds. A big thank you to everyone who joined the discussion! Looking forward to seeing this resource being implemented in Maltese classrooms to support early years education. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Foundation of holistic education The importance of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in education cannot be overstated. SEL empowers students to build resilience, develop emotional intelligence, and foster interpersonal skills—all essential traits for navigating today's complex world. Check out my most recent blog that explains: 1. Evidence-based insights from leading organizations like UNESCO, OECD, and the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). 2. Practical recommendations for international schools, including curriculum integration, teacher training, and embedding SEL into extracurricular activities. 3. At a glance, the Little Stars study adds valuable data to support more effective, transformational ECD policy prioritisation and budgeting by South Africa's 7th administration. Well done to the research team. It emphasises the importance of ensuring a strong network of support around young children and their parents and not just focussing on early learning centres, infrastructure or materials. These are crucially important, but on their own, not enough to achieve transformation. Parenting support to enable nurturing care is a crucial variable to equalise opportunities - but sorely neglected at a policy and resourcing level. This seems to be linked to limited high-level understanding and leadership of parenting support for nurturing care as a critical national development priority - a key ingredient to ending intergenerational patterns of poor development and the persistently high levels of inequality that South Africa must face head on in the current five year planning cycel.
The ELOM tools were used in a study exploring the impact of a story-based teacher training programme on language and early #literacy in 4- and 5-year-olds in South Africa. The programme (Little Stars 🌟 by WordworksSA) offers practitioner development and resources that support quality language teaching. The ELOM 4&5 Assessment, Home Learning Environment (HLE) Tool, and Social-Emotional Rating Scale were used, alongside other assessments, to show the programme's effectiveness in improving language, early literacy skills, and overall development. The HLE Tool revealed that early interventions that include parents are likely to have a greater impact on language development than classroom interventions alone. The final brief exploring the impact of the programme is shared below and the full suite of research briefs is available on the Wordworks website: https://lnkd.in/dzKsnMeE The briefs are available in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. Thank you for sharing your findings Shelley O'Carroll, Kate Cain, Jane Oakhill, Daleen Klop, Monique Visser and Annelien Smith (van Huyssteen). The study was conducted by a team from Wordworks, Lancaster University, University of Sussex, and Stellenbosch University and funded by The British Academy. The research brief series was funded through the Lancaster University FST Impact Fund. #earlyyears #earlychildhooddevelopment #sdg4 #earlyliteracy #southafrica #development
