A quick update on H5N1 (bird flu) for those who aren't following it. The CDC is responding to a concerning outbreak of avian influenza A virus in U.S. dairy cattle 🐄 and other animals. 🦠 The risk remains low for the general public, but those with close contact to infected animals are at greater risk. So far, there's been one confirmed human case - a worker in Texas who developed conjunctivitis but has since recovered. 👀 As of May 3, 2024: 📊 220+ people monitored for A(H5N1) after exposure 🩺 30+ people tested 🩹 1 confirmed human case Studies suggest existing pre-pandemic A(H5) vaccines should offer good cross-protection. 💉🛡️ Honestly, my main concern right now is if we're able to apply any learnings from COVID. In certain socioeconomic contexts, vaccination against avian influenza can contribute to the overall sustainability of the poultry industry and to the preservation of outdoor production systems. These are often a cultural heritage, even though such systems are not optimal in their biosecurity. It helps to maintain the health of domestic and wild birds, ensuring a stable supply of poultry products for consumers and preserving biodiversity. In addition, vaccination programmes with pre-established risk-based protocols enhance a country’s outbreak preparedness, both in the speed of response and preparation for the increased risk.
