What does the future hold for your industry? Many leaders try to avoid change as much as possible. They have a business model that has worked for a very long time and so "if it ain't broke...why fix it?" Those are the famous last words of companies like Blockbuster, Kodak, Borders, and Circuit City to name a few. The problem is that technology is changing everything so fast, that what was new yesterday has been replaced today. Leaders who fail to not only ask "what's next" but fail to ask themselves "how am I going to get there before anyone else" will kill their company. Guaranteed. Follow my old boss Steve Ells' example. My 6-year-old daughter eats her blueberry muffin and as she's jamming the last piece into her mouth with both hands, she runs off to the living room where her brothers are watching a movie. 🏃♀️ I loudly proclaim, "Baby, get your cute butt back here!" She runs back looking confused. So I then say to her... "When you're done eating, you need to be aware of the way you leave the table. We need to leave the table looking better than the way we found it. When you sat down there was tucked-in chair, a plate, a muffin, and a cup of water for you. The table wasn't dirty, but there was a lot of stuff on the table. When you're finished, you should clean everything up and leave it looking nicer than the way you found it - wiped down, dishes put away, and chair retucked in." That's how we should approach many situations in life. Working to leave something better off than the way you found it. Leading others. Leading a business. An updated home. Do implict expectations, unassigned work or "shared" responsibilities exist in your organization? Ignored operational needs as significant as establishing team processes or as minor as restocking the supply cabinet can lead to frustration, disengagement or diminished trust. When we leave things ambiguous, we're often pleasantly surprised that responsible adults step in and fill the void. Be careful! Those things aren't happening by magic. Someone is selflessly doing them, often atpersonal cost and without appreciation. Great evening at Leeds University listening to Will Stratton-Morris CEO of Cafe Nero as part of Leeds University Business School Corporate Wisdom series. Will's words of Corporate Wisdom were as follows: 1. In the first six months of joining a company you should do every job. Learn the business through the eyes of your employees so you understand them. Experience it whilst you are still new enough to see it as a customer. 2. You are a combination of the brands you have worked for, share your experience and your journey to give people the context of you how operate. 3. Anyone can write a strategy, it's how you share the narrative of the strategy that makes it valuable. 4. Know your positioning, know who you are and know the space you operate in and own that space! 5. Adapt the brand as relevant but protect your core business. 6. Face into the fact you made the wrong decision early, own it and go again. 7. Keep challenging yourself - competition keeps you on your toes! 8. Get to the heart of what customers want!
