A European answer to climate change. We need it. Volt offers it. 🤝 Dutch MP Laurens and Dutch lead candidates Anna & Reinier talk about the damage that national right-wing politics does to the fight against climate change. While we need to accelerate our climate solutions, they halt progress. ❌ We can’t let that happen! ✊🏻 Vote in the EU elections on 6-9 June! 🗳️ #BeBoldVoteVolt #VoteVolt #EP24 #StrongerTogether #FuturemadeinEurope #enableEU #YouAreEuropean

In an interview with Clean Energy Wire, I spoke about the EU Green Deal in the context of the upcoming election, see below
Climate backlash, rise of populists -- What happens to climate policy after this week's EU elections? As part of Clean Energy Wire | CLEW's package on the impact of right-wing populists on EU #climate efforts, I spoke to Philipp Jäger of Jacques Delors Centre about what the election outcome really means. Jäger says we should not expect a big rollback of already adopted #EUGreenDeal legislation. However, "I am a bit more worried about the necessary climate legislation going forward, about a negative impact on the ambition in the future." The researcher explains that member states still have a lot of say in EU policymaking; the European Parliament is only one of several actors. "Parliament matters greatly, but nothing happens against the will of the capitals," says Jäger. https://lnkd.in/dZHg_28C

#europe matters, elections matter and this year the outcome will define the course on the most pressing issues of our times - #climateaction, #multilateralism and safeguarding #democracy. That's why reporting appropriatly on the #euelections2024 with a clear focus on what matters is crucial across the continent. Yet, the #europeanunion is tricky to understand and follow at the best of times. Combined with the complexity of #energytransition and #climatepolicy issues - between member states and other regions - and the difficult #geopolitics this makes an focused and relevant coverage both more important and more difficult. The factsheet of Julian Wettengel provides in good Clean Energy Wire | CLEW manner both: A guide to #europeanunion policy making and elections and a guide to the issues at stake - ideal for #journalists, #energy experts and enthusiastic #european policy beginners (who all can sign up for our newsletters, which are also free and more frequent than my posts https://lnkd.in/d8cgH2n). 🚀 Today is EU overshoot day, which means that if the whole planet lived like the EU, we would have exhausted all the planet's resources for the year by today. We joined more than 300 other civil society organisations to urge EU leaders to tackle the nature, climate and pollution crises following the upcoming EU elections. Carbon removal is a part of the answer to these urgent challenges. Read the full appeal here: https://lnkd.in/e3zxCkDJ #votefutureEU #useyourvote #carbonremoval

The Labour manifesto looks "like a landslide for a green economy"! 🌡 Climate and clean energy front and center 🤓 Appoints Ed Miliband, an energy secretary with many years’ experience in climate diplomacy 🐙 CEO of Octopus Energy states that the "results look clear — voters have rejected anti net zero rhetoric and chosen cheaper, cleaner, more secure energy" While this looks optimistic during election-mania, how will the policy landscape settle? The current commentary on the VCM battles to and fro over the direction of the Science Based Targets initiative decision on beyond value chain mitigation. Could a pro-market country and pro-environment government provide express support for a high-integrity VCM as we saw from the The White House?

Well, it's time to vote. #Europe will enter a new phase like it or not. International order is evolving/transforming for many decades to come. #climate policies and #netzero fate WON'T be entirely decided by these elections. It will be critical for short run implementation which is highly dependent on what MS and regions do in the next years. Lot to be said next Monday. Now, time to vote and hope the best for the #EuropeanUnion to move on and become stronger.

Ahead of #EU elections, the #EuropeanCommission recommended on Tuesday that the EU cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040. This is an ambitious goal that will gauge political support for the region's #climate #change efforts. In response to objections by farmers who were upset about EU green standards, among other grievances, the EU executive softened part of the recommendation regarding agriculture, even though the overall aim was within the range suggested by the EU's official climate scientific consultants. #climatechange #europeanunion
