#europe matters, elections matter and this year the outcome will define the course on the most pressing issues of our times - #climateaction, #multilateralism and safeguarding #democracy. That's why reporting appropriatly on the #euelections2024 with a clear focus on what matters is crucial across the continent. Yet, the #europeanunion is tricky to understand and follow at the best of times. Combined with the complexity of #energytransition and #climatepolicy issues - between member states and other regions - and the difficult #geopolitics this makes an focused and relevant coverage both more important and more difficult. Are the recent elections in the EU, with significant gains by far-right parties, going to dilute climate policies? This question has emerged after the recent European elections. This article explains that we should not interpret the results as a rejection of green policies. Despite the gains by far-right parties, the majority of Europeans still support climate action. The article also highlights that it's crucial to communicate the broader benefits of a green transition and address social inequalities to maintain European commitment to a greener future. It is evident that this recent electoral process has introduced a new layers of complexity and uncertainty to European climate and energy policy. #EuropeanParliament #ClimateAction #GreenPolicies #EuropeanParliament #ClimateAction #GreenPolicies

Insightful piece by Net Zero Tracker co-lead, Professor Thomas Hale, at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford in the Economist Impact, examining the implications of this super election year for climate. Featuring data from Net Zero Tracker, this piece calls into question the myth that democracy is a barrier to climate action, highlighting that 33 of the 47 countries that still lack #netzero targets or similar are autocracies, whilst 22 of the 25 countries with legally binding net zero targets are democracies. “Frequent elections limit long-term planning. Special interests and misinformation distort public debate. Public participation can slow down the big-infrastructure projects or behavioural changes needed to drive transformation." “All of these challenges are real, but the solution is not less democracy. Instead, around the world we see innovations in the governance and politics of climate change that highlight the ability of—and imperative for—democracy to evolve.”
Will climate change win the 2024 elections? Thomas Hale, professor at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford shares why this election year is as much an opportunity as it is a risk for climate action. Read here: http://econimpact.co/gc

An incisive piece from the Net Zero Tracker co-lead, Prof. Thomas Hale, Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford in the Economist Impact exploring the impact of democracy on climate action, in anticipation of this ‘super election year’ for climate. Drawing on examples from democracies across the globe, this piece demonstrates how the green transition has laid foundations for more pro-climate politicians to gain traction, and how voters could drive crucial steps forward for climate in the upcoming elections.

In just a few days, voters in the EU will head to the ballot box to elect the next European Parliament. The outcome of these elections will have a big influence over the level of political ambition for climate action for the next five years. Following a cycle where the EU transformed key areas of its climate and energy legislation as part of the #EUGreenDeal, the 2024 poll will be crucial in shaping what climate policies are enacted in the years ahead and whether climate targets can be met. In the run-up to these elections, polling shows there's still broad consensus in support of continued climate action from voters across the political spectrum in every European country. But in a context where economic and security issues are understandably topping the agenda, it will be essential to ensure climate solutions are seen as important answers to these challenges too. This is the biggest year in modern history for elections around the globe. Citizens of at least 64 countries — collectively home to about half of the world’s population — have, or will, cast votes for national leaders in 2024. In Europe, the June Parliament elections were crucial for climate action. Despite the EU’s ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2040, climate change was not a key reason for most voters to go to the polls. The European Commission’s climate policies could face challenging political situations in several European countries to achieve its objectives. In the UK, the Labour Party's July election win under Prime Minister Keir Starmer marks a significant shift towards strong climate policies, including a commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 and lifting the ban on onshore wind development. In France, following the July elections, climate policies have to be dealt with in a fragmented parliament. 👉 Learn more about how recent and upcoming elections could impact climate action across Europe and globally https://lnkd.in/ehU2zEzB #ClimateAction #Elections2024 #Sustainability #EuropeanUnion

How will the #EuropeanUnion elections effect the US? The recent EU election results signal a shift towards the right, posing challenges for future climate policies. While current EU policies are likely to remain, the pathway to new, ambitious climate measures could face significant hurdles. This shift might echo in the US, where climate policy advancements could similarly encounter increased resistance. As both regions grapple with economic pressures and industrial competitiveness, the focus may shift from purely #sustainable initiatives to ones driven by industrial and economic imperatives.
