There has been an epic battle over the past 20 years between two types of lithium-ion batteries: nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP). While NMC still boasts better energy density, LFP is making a major comeback thanks to its safer, more accessible materials and improving performance. However, China still dominates the LFP supply chain. It is fascinating to closely track the dynamically changing global electric vehicle battery supply chains, especially at a time when two of the world's largest economies continue to remain involved in an ever-evolving trade war. Mainland China imposed a temporary export control measure on graphite, a critical material used in producing battery anodes, on December 1, 2023. Same day, the US Treasury Department published guidance on foreign entity of concern (FEOC), placing the People's Republic of China (PRC) in the list. The mandate makes it difficult for made-in-China products to qualify for tax credits in the US. Mainland China, the world's largest producer of graphite, refines almost 90% of the graphite globally. The graphite export control measure has left big non-Chinese battery makers look elsewhere to diversify their supply chains. So, so much going on right now at the intersection of trade policy, US-China competition, and energy transitions. In my latest for Barron's, I discuss changes in the final Treasury guidance on critical mineral sourcing that will allow Chinese graphite in IRA-compliant EV batteries until 2027. It is one thing to aspire to a “Made in America” supply chain for minerals key to renewable technology and semiconductors. Solvay of Belgium, one of the world's top suppliers of high-purity hydrogen peroxide for chipmaking, has delayed construction of its Arizona plant for later review, sources with knowledge of the matter said. They cited cost concerns as well as the longer-than-expected wait for its key clients Intel and TSMC to expand production. Chang Chun Group, another leading producer of semiconductor-grade hydrogen peroxide, significantly scaled back the construction of its new plant in Arizona. The Taiwanese chemical group has started building part of the plant, but on a much smaller scale than planned. A source familiar with the matter said the cost is "several times" greater than it had expected. KPCT Advanced Chemicals, a joint venture between Kanto-PPC and Chemtrade, also postponed the construction of its high-purity sulphuric acid plant in Arizona. Topco, a leading chemical and material distributor, has put on hold its planned logistics center in Arizona, a company executive told Nikkei Asia. https://lnkd.in/gpCkEvGH

It’s difficult to run a totalitarian country while at the same time nurturing global geopolitical ambitions through industrial initiatives in key sectors. Record number of bankruptcies in the Chinese EV, solar, and semiconductor sectors. “In 2023 nearly 11,000 chip-related firms went out of business, roughly 30 a day, according to Qichacha, a company that collects corporate data. It says the figure, which has been reported in Chinese media, is accurate, but that it can no longer supply such numbers as they have become “too sensitive”.
