There has been an epic battle over the past 20 years between two types of lithium-ion batteries: nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP). While NMC still boasts better energy density, LFP is making a major comeback thanks to its safer, more accessible materials and improving performance. However, China still dominates the LFP supply chain. In this episode, CEO Vivas Kumar of startup Mitra Chem weighs in on why America needs domestic production of LFP materials. https://lnkd.in/e_GhjHMY

Volts is a newsletter & podcast about clean energy & politics from David Roberts. It comes out roughly twice a week.
About us
What with climate change accelerating and US politics falling apart, it’s pretty grim out there. Yet alongside these doom loops, somewhat anomalously, something good is happening: the transition away from fossil fuels to clean, carbon-free energy is underway, and it is accelerating every day. That transition has become an enormous, sprawling meta-story. It spans the entire economy, from heavy industry to tech to retail. It’s unfolding on every level of government, from local zoning boards to the federal government to international treaties. It involves technology, politics, policy, psychology, even philosophy. It’s a lot to track. At Volts, David Roberts track it. He follows the news, reads the trade publications and research reports, talks to the engineers and policy staffers, and thinks hard about the larger political and social context. Rather than the broad-and-shallow view offered by most publications, David sifts through the flotsam for what matters and then go deep on it. The goal is not quantity of information but quality of understanding. Oh, and fun! We hope to build a community here at Volts as fascinated by this stuff as we are, willing to share their expertise and indulge David's dad jokes. We hope you will join us.

The Environmental Voter Project has a unique approach: rather than convincing people to care about climate change, it identifies people who already do, but don't consistently vote, and works to get them to the polls. In this episode, EVP founder Nathaniel Stinnett discusses how to find these voters, keep them engaged, and measure their impact. https://lnkd.in/e8SGXD9m

Through the passage of IRA and CHIPS, the Biden administration has invested billions of dollars and created more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs in purple and red districts that have been hard-hit by globalization and disinvestment. In this episode, Julian Spector of Canary Media Inc., reporting from these communities, shares about local reactions to this influx of new money and opportunities, and the reality that Trump’s Project 2025 wants to roll back the tax credits fueling this growth. https://lnkd.in/gxEJbbWT

After decades of talk about offshore wind, California seems closer than ever to actually supporting an industry. But to meet the state’s goal of five gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030, a lot of as-yet-nascent pieces need to fall into place. In this episode, Adam Stern of Offshore Wind California and Jocelyn Brown-Saracino of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) discuss California's recent policy efforts and the state of floating-wind technology. https://lnkd.in/gC-iw-yc
