𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆! Did you know there are over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the United States and more than 41,000 in New Jersey? Thanks to the leadership of the New Jersey Center for Nonprofits, we know these organizations employ 330,000 people, spend more than $56 billion annually—much of this at home in the Garden State—and harness the power of nearly 2 million volunteers. No matter where you live, work, or look, there’s likely a nonprofit nearby making a difference in your community, be it for neighbors, the local economy, schools, or green spaces. At Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, as a legal services nonprofit, we are committed to ensuring that access to justice is not dependent on the size of one’s bank account. With no constitutional right to an attorney in civil legal matters—matters that often go to the heart of basic human need, safety, and security—we believe no one should face these legal challenges alone, especially those living in communities that have been historically disinvested from, under-resourced, and under-represented. From fighting wrongful evictions, navigating divorce and consumer debt, serving those who served, and supporting survivors, our nonprofit of 22 staff, hundreds of volunteers, and even more supporters are on the frontlines of justice, taking cases and changing lives. But, nonprofits like VLJ can’t do it alone: •𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲, because while our services are free for our clients, they aren’t free to coordinate: vljnj.org/donate •𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁—make an impact on someone's life (including your own): vljnj.org/why-probono •𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽? If you or someone you know needs our legal services, we’re here to help: vljnj.org/get-help #VLJNJ #ProBono #NationalNonprofitDay #AccessToJustice #GiveBack #CivilLegalAid #FreeLegalHelp #NewJersey

Each week, we’ll be giving one of our members a platform to talk about their work and why it’s meaningful. • First up, our AFP-CI President, Andrea Wright! • • Andrea is the Director of Fund Development at the Iowa Center for Children's Justice (ICCJ). ICCJ is one of only a few nonprofits in the nation providing legal representation for children of divorce or custody disputes. ICCJ’s work is important because it focuses on providing caring and knowledgeable child-focused resources for the family law community and children whose parents are embroiled in conflict. While we represent kids, we seek custody resolutions and promote co-parenting solutions that are in the best interest of the entire family. All of ICCJ’s programs and legal services seek to foster a healthy future for our clients and their families. • • • Three valuable lessons that Andrea learned in her fundraising career are: 1 - The importance of relationships - not only relationships with supporters, but relationships with others in fund development. Surround yourself with fundraising friends who understand the work you are doing and can help you celebrate the successes, recover from the misses, and remind you that some things are best dealt with after a full night of sleep. 2 - Authenticity will get you everywhere with donors, sponsors, community partners, etc. Be brave enough to bring your whole self, and you will be remembered and respected for it. 3 - "No" doesn't mean never, it might just mean "not right now." So many are afraid of the "no" but I try to remember that my role is to present opportunities to others that might fit their passion and purpose, and for different reasons, now might not be the best time for them. This doesn't have to mean it won't ever fit, so continuing to stay in contact may lead to something else down the road. #Networking #Fundraising #FundraisingProfessionals #AFP #AFPCentralIowa #ICCJ #NonprofitLeadership

From our intake team: "In July, we saw a 30% increase in service requests compared to the previous month. Each inquiry is carefully reviewed to determine if we can best serve their needs. We assess factors such as abuse or neglect history, jurisdiction, legal standing, and the specific area of law required. Out of these inquiries, 40% met the criteria to proceed with a full application. While we can’t assist every family directly, it’s reassuring to know that even when we’re not the right fit, we can connect them with other valuable community resources, ensuring no one is left without support." -Gabby Cena, MJM Intake Specialist #mjm #methodistjusticeministry #nonprofitlawyers #probonolawyers #philanthropy #hope #protect #support #admin #july #fortworth #officestats
