A timely and sad account that illustrates how fragile urban ecosystems are and how much the general retreat from cities during COVID accelerated the decline of office work and changed the fate of many cities across the U.S. You see similar patterns in the descent of Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and many other urban areas. As an urban planner by education, I see the many small factors required to make a vibrant urban area such as business diversity, accessibility, safety (even if just perceived), etc.

MORE CHARM FOR DOWNTOWN SHERMAN: Trolleys could soon be coming to one of North Texas’s fastest-growing cities! The city approved the purchase of two trolleys that are expected to eventually find a home on main street! The city plans on naming the trolley systems the “Intraurban” - a nod to the railway of the same name that ran through downtown until the 1940s! Of course, these trolleys aren’t the best technology that the TI and GlobiTech engineers who are moving to the area would be able to bring, but it’s the combination of small-town charm with big-time business that’s bringing so many people to the area! If you’re interested in learning more about the growth happening in Sherman and across the Texoma region, head over to our newly-updated city data pages, where we’re posting updates every week on markets across our area that we want you to invest in: https://lnkd.in/gqBeENTw READ MORE ABOUT TROLLEYS: https://lnkd.in/gUn3eQBc #ShermanTexas #TechGrowth #Sherman #NorthTexas #Investing #InvestmentTips

Tune in to a FREE WEBINAR this Thursday (April 11th) at 6:30 pm EST / 5:30 pm CST / 4:30 pm MST / 3:30 pm PST, where I will join three outstanding panelists to discuss the complexities and implications of NEW YORK CITY Mayor Eric Adams' SWEEPING NEW COMMERCIAL REZONING PROPOSAL, known as the "City of Yes For Economic Opportunities." The webinar, titled "'City of Yes' or Planning Mess?" has been organized and sponsored by the venerable City Club of New York - see the link below for specifics on how to register. Along with fellow panelists George Janes, Paul Graziano and Laura Wolf-Powers, I'll be looking in particular at the proposal's potential impact on the different types of business districts across the city, considering the extent to which, in its component parts, it sensibly addresses legitimate issues and challenges (which, in many cases, it does), or, rather, suggests a panicked response to temporary dislocations and misunderstood dynamics (which could, in turn, result in unintended consequences). I'll also be raising broader questions about the extent to which traditional zoning is really the best tool for regulating ground-floor use and even if so, whether the existing paradigm accurately reflects the nuances of retail mix. It will be nothing if not provocative! #retailcontrarian #retail #retailleasing #retailrealestate #retailproperty #retailtrends #retaildevelopment #retailmarket #retailbroker #retailspace #retailindustry #retailers #downtown #mainstreet #mainstreets #citycenter #citycentre #highstreet #placer #placerai #urbanretail #icsc #commercialrealestate #ida #iedc #uli #icma #planning #marketanalysis #siteselection #futureofretail #urbandevelopment #jll #zoning #retailvacancy #vacantstorefronts #vacantretail #emptystorefronts #storefrontvacancy #citymanager #businessimprovementdistrict #bid #businessoffashion #wwd #retailbrew #storefront #urbanneighborhoods #downtownrevitalization #covidimpact #pandemicimpact #covidrecovery #pandemicrecovery #nyt #wsj #urbanregeneration #planetizen #economicdevelopment #storefronts #atcm #communitydevelopment #buildbackbetter #buildingbackbetter #cuf #jonathanbowles #momandpop #momandpops #smallbusinesses #chainstores #chains #chainstore #smallbusiness #independents #gailbrewer #rebny #cityofyes #ericadams #mayoradams #rezoning #paulawolfpowers #paulgraziano #georgejanes #juanrivero #johnshapiro #pratt #urbanist #thecityclubofnewyork #municipalartsociety #regionalplanassociation #planning #landuse #americanplanningassociation #apa #thecity #ny1 #adrienneadams #groundfloor #streetlevel #streetlife #activation #placemaking #commercialdistricts #realestate #groundfloorspace #mjbconsulting #paullevy #partnershipfornewyorkcity

Thrilled to share what I’ve been working on lately: today, my team launched *NYC’s first-ever Tenant Protection Cabinet*! If you’re living in NYC, you know the challenges of being a tenant all too well: - Rent is high - Finding a new apartment, especially an affordable one, is hard - Pests, heating, and leaks are issues for many The Tenant Protection Cabinet (TPC) brings over 2 dozen leaders and agencies in City government together, breaking down silos to deliver for tenants. The Cabinet will: - Make it easier for tenants to find the information they need - Highlight underutilized resources so renters get connected to impactful services, and - Use data to drive our investments and track progress I can’t wait to see what we can do together to make New York City a safer, fairer, more affordable place to live for the millions who rent in this city! Big thank you to the many people who helped get this off the ground, and many more who will carry it forward. More here: https://lnkd.in/eNiyKAQy
