Very interesting Law Firm benchmarking report that our Savills team just put out after surveying 1,400 Am Law 100 firm locations across the U.S. The average efficiency of Am Law 100 offices is 937 square feet per attorney (sf/atty). 30.4% of these firms’ locations are in the 750-1,000 sf/atty range, and 37.3% are over 1,000 sf/atty. In examining Am Law 100 renewals and relocations over 20,000 square feet (sf), signed in 2023, 44.4% were expansions, 37.8% represented downsizes, and 17.8% stayed in roughly the same amount of space. Demand for experienced lawyers drives expansion of law firms in California Several law firms in Los Angeles have recently opened or expanded their offices, driven by the demand for experienced labor and employment, intellectual property, and financial services lawyers in California. Thompson Hine LLP established its first West Coast office after acquiring litigation boutique Conkle, Kremer & Engel. Alston & Bird also announced the opening of a second LA office in Century City. California is home to about 86 Am Law 100 firms, leasing a combined 4.5m square feet. A great article from Law.com on recent trends in the office space market for law firms. Clients want high-quality litigation teams and they want to find great value for their lawyers. One place where firms can be thoughtful about costs without sacrificing attorney quality is by right-sizing office space. Large law firm office spaces can be gargantuan – often in the hundreds of thousands of square feet for one location. And these spaces often come with long-term leases locking in high-cost rents.
