The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has completed the final supply chain trial for a new biofuel blend, with bp providing the fuel to Hapag-Lloyd AG's DNV-classed Tihama containership. The trials, which commenced in July 2022, involved the testing of a biofuel blended with very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) as part of wider efforts to develop a framework to provide greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement assurances for drop-in marine fuels. Renewable energy sources are becoming evermore involved in the conversation regarding transition to lower usage of fossil fuels. In particular, biofuels are becoming an increasingly popular topic of discussion in the oil and gas industry, even for big companies like Exxon (see below). Companies are making an effort to find ways to reduce carbon output, and biofuels might be a surprisingly effective way to do so. They could be so effective, in fact, that they could help decarbonize the transportation sector. Made from plant matter and other natural materials, biofuels pose almost no environmental harm, and might just be the future of global energy. It's exciting to observe the oil and gas industry at this time as it considers a transformation of its style of energy sources. #PGE301
Biofuels can be a drop-in substitute for fossil fuels, making them a lower-emission alternative for hard-to-decarbonize sectors like commercial transportation. And with global demand for #biofuels expected to triple by 2050, our Product Solutions team is gearing up to meet the moment. Here's how.

Although we may not need to part from fossil fuel use in the near future, efforts like this, such as using renewable biological sources like plants, algae, and other biomass are steps in the right direction towards a consistent supply of alternative energy. While these biofuels may only make up a small fraction of the energy consumed in the United States compared to oil LNG and coal; with advancing technology, we could find a way to extract a substantial amount of energy using this process. This could present itself as a movement of nationwide composting, recycling, and other efforts to waste little to no organic matter that could be used for biofuels. Farmers can contribute by donating more of their sugar, starch, oilseed crops, and leftover animal fats. This push for biofuel has noticeable potential to influence the future of our energy production. #PGE301

Albion Marine completed a major feasibility study for the largest Canadian client on #conversion for the use of #biofuels. ABS issued a bulletin with similar recommendations. As per ABS, with new regulations aimed at reducing air pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs), there is increased interest in biofuels. Zero and low carbon fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, and biofuels with negligible sulfur can lower particulate matter, gaseous and carbon emissions. MARPOL Annex VI has dealt with the use of biofuels by fuel oil quality regulations under Regulation 18.3.2, while the ISO standard 8217 “Petroleum products – Fuels (class F) – Specifications of marine fuels” was modified in 2017 to widen tolerance for use of biofuels in existing and new fuel oil grades.
