Last week FintechNZ, in partnership with KPMG, had the pleasure of running our first FinTechNZ Growth Capital Summit. This session comprised 35+ leaders which included Funders across the investment spectrum, Fintechs and aligned Professional services This was a half-day session supported by the new release of the KPMG Pulse of Fintech report, a USA-investment-focused tech session, and a cross-view sector panel. As break-out teams, we focused on identifying the challenges, opportunities and a high-level action plan for the Fintech (funding ecosystem) I won't go into detail here but rather whats on the way This includes; Presentation of findings and recommendations to Min Bayly, particularly focusing on enablement points such as Sandbox, accelerators, aligned funding and govt agencies, regulatory settings, expanding open finance frameworks and more The fundamental driver we need is certainty, sector collaboration, more competition and ultimately focusing on what is best for customer value - and by inference NZ FinTechNZ will be sharing the insight back to this team soon and later bringing these insights not only into our Fintech strategy and action point but as importantly into the Fintech Hui next March 11 at Shed 10 I would like to thank these fabulous supporters Priti M., Jessica Dine, Daniel Teper, Anna MacFarlane,Melanie Boudet Hearn CA,CMInstD, McGregor Fea, James W. My favourite insights from yesterday's superb panel discussion on Fintech and the investing environment with Innovate Finance 🧟♂️ There remain a lot of zombie fintechs with valuations far below their last funding round. Not many went out of business in 2023, but fintechs now face a far more difficult funding environment than 21/22. This will mean operations cease, flat/down rounds or M&A. Investors are also reluctant to sell their holdings below the value they bought in and this is stopping capital from being recycled into the next wave of fintech funds. ⌛ Many VCs are taking a wait and see approach when it comes to AI Like everyone else not working at a leading AI tech company, VCs are learning and watching to see what takes off. Being right at the wrong time can be just as bad as being wrong altogether. The make up of active investors is also changing. Tourist investors and cross over funds are out, 'MANG' (Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia and Google) are in. 🤖 The big opportunity in fintech for 2024 will be Wealth Management x AI Wealth management remains relatively undisrupted compared to other areas of finance. But it's the more classic automation use case rather than Gen AI which brings the most promising opportunity, given the regulatory barriers and risks associated with automated advice.
