Ocean Encounters: Seabirds - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution via YouTube : Surviving life on the open ocean Seabirds are uniquely adapted to life at sea—and uniquely vulnerable to its perils. Many spend the majority of their decades-long lives far from shore, flying thousands of miles over open water to find food, returning to land only to mate and raise their young. Join us as we learn about these extraordinary animals and talk with scientists working to understand and protect them. https://lnkd.in/enH92U-i

Whales vs. Humans Whales are making waves in the maritime world. In the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea, these majestic creatures have been observed ramming and sinking ships. This unusual behavior has been reported repeatedly over the past couple of years, leaving many puzzled and intrigued. The reason behind this sudden shift in behavior remains a mystery. Is it a response to territorial intrusions or is there a deeper, yet undiscovered reason? More research is needed to unravel this aquatic enigma. While we wait for more data, it's fascinating to ponder on the power and unpredictability of nature. Even the largest ships are not immune to the might of these ocean giants. Share this video if you're intrigued by these whale incidents and want to spread awareness! #WhaleBehavior #MarineConservation #StraitsOfGibraltar

#TechTuesday ~ During the #SEPacificSeamounts expedition, using vessel-mounted multibeam sonar, the team on R/V Falkor (too) observed a subsurface eddy in the middle of the ocean at about 400 to 800m depth. Eddies are water systems that move in opposition to the main current of the greater ecosystem, creating a circular, swirling dynamic like a whirlpool. They can travel great distances before disappearing. They are often formed when a larger ocean current pinches off a smaller section that becomes an eddy. According to NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the swirling motion of eddies helps move colder, nutrient-rich water from the deep Ocean up to the surface. (More info here: https://lnkd.in/eH3pKH3N ) Nutrient-rich waters attract a variety of animals and organisms to feed. Marine mammals and seabirds migrate through this region, which harbors 82 threatened or endangered species. It is likely home to species that will be new to science. During the expedition, scientists were exploring understudied seamounts, or underwater mountains, looking for biodiversity and oceanic processes influencing life in an essential area of our global Ocean. A detailed understanding of life in and outside Chile’s marine protected areas will give scientists and officials tools for protecting and managing this vital resource while supporting future marine management plans for the Southeast Pacific.

Researchers have uncovered the largest-ever deep-sea #CoralReef off the U.S. East Coast, serving us with hopeful news amid challenging times for coral reefs. ℹ️ Spanning 310 miles long and 68 miles wide, the reef, dubbed "Million Mounds," is a mesmerizing underwater landscape home to stony, cold-water coral. Discovered in an area thought to be "sparsely inhabited," this remarkable find offers a glimmer of optimism for these fragile marine ecosystems facing threats from human activities like trawling, pipelines, and oil production. https://lnkd.in/ebY7WeUA

Imagine we're navigating the wild seas of today's world, where being connected feels a lot like being adrift on separate islands. Picture this: sending out signals for personal space and safeguarding our treasure troves of energy is our trusty compass, guiding us through the choppy waters to the lush islands where deep connections with fellow adventurers await. Getting yanked around from island to island? Total shipwreck for our spirits, draining our treasure chests of time, energy, and all-around mojo. So, hoisting up the flag of boundaries is not just smart; it's crucial for keeping our ships afloat and our pirate crews healthy and hearty. Now, what treasure maps do we follow to set these boundaries, you ask? Here be the X marks the spot: 🛥️Claiming our personal deck space (a.k.a. physical boundaries) 🛥️ Charting the course of our hearts and desires (yes, that includes sexuality) 🛥️ Guarding the treasure of our thoughts and feelings 🛥️ Keeping a tight grip on our gold and gear (lending with care) 🛥️ Managing the wind in our sails (our precious time and energy—because nobody can sail on empty!) So, setting boundaries isn't about solving the mysteries of the cosmos or discovering new lands. It's about being the captain of your own ship, steering through life's adventures with confidence. Arrr, matey, let's navigate these waters together, respecting each other's flags and sailing into the sunset of well-being and mutual respect. #settingboundaries #ConnectedButAdrift #NavigateTheWildSeas #PersonalSpaceCompass #GuardYourEnergy #TreasureTrovesOfEnergy #DeepConnections #IslandsOfBoundaries #ShipwreckedSpirits
