PATHS TO THE TRADES - how to become a heavy equipment operator. What an equipment operator does: Equipment operators can specialize in specific equipment or run a variety of equipment including, but not limited to bulldozers, backhoes, scrapers, dump trucks, pavers, and more, building everything from houses to highways. Pathways: -Apprenticeship: Apprenticeship programs combine on-the-job training with classroom learning. -Trade school: Shorter certificate programs focus on specific equipment operation skills. -On-the-job training: Lots of equipment operators learn on the job and work their way up at companies from general laborer positions. -Military experience: Some military equipment operation experience can translate well to heavy equipment operation. Lina (pictured) is a second-year electrical apprentice at ASC who was drawn to a career in submarines. "I didn't just want to be doing everyday electrical work," she said. "You're doing something that has meaning behind it, you're helping the country. It's such a rewarding job when you fix something that's going out to sea." Lina completed Year 12 and achieved a Certificate II in Business and a Certificate II in Electrotechnology before joining ASC as a first-year electrical apprentice at the start of 2022. "An apprenticeship at ASC is very sought-after. I feel grateful that i can work on such complicated systems and for such a unique business," she said. "I've noticed I've taken attention to detail into other areas of my life like my hobbies. Just a real high-quality mindset - do it right the first time. ASC has taught me a lot about that." Lina found her deeper purpose working on the submarines and challenging herself every day. I like the theory behind electrical. It's a lot more interesting. You have to use your initiative to work things out. We get to work on the biggest DC motor in the southern hemisphere, plus we get to work on the submarines. It's a super cool experience." ‘Learn the things that they don’t teach you at college.’ It’s always great to have customer’s apprentices visiting the workshops. Here they get to see the things that aren’t taught at college. These three apprentices are getting an appreciation of electric motor failures and what’s done to put them right. Among a busy, dedicated team, our apprentices are learning valuable skills that will benefit them both within and outside of the workplace. Since starting a Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship at Ferguson Marine 18 months ago, second-year apprentice Simon Millar has developed communication and interpersonal skills alongside developing his technical abilities. “Communication is extremely important in the yard. Many tasks on the yard have many different requirements from a variety of departments. These requirements must happen in stages and must be communicated through supervisors and managers before they can be passed down to us, which in turn need to be fed back with any difficulties or necessary changes. When performing tasks, especially while lifting loads, communication is key for safety, while still being able to perform the job in a time-efficient manner. “On the yard, 95 per cent of all tasks require more than one person to perform them, so teamwork is essential. It is important to maintain healthy professional relationships within the workplace so that work can be performed to the highest standard possible to reach the client’s requirements.” #NAW2024 #NationalApprenticeshipWeek #SkillsForLife

I want to share an Excel initiative that I believe promotes safer work through the improvement of worker performance. Yes, I am talking about Excel's Apprentice Week. This is one week when our apprentices come together in one place to learn more about the skills required to do their work well, from the most knowledgeable and experienced Excel technicians and other leading refrigeration and air-conditioning experts. Led this year by one of Excel's Managing Directors, Craig Heerdegen, it's all about learning and sharing knowledge. Check out the video below for day three highlights.

DEVELOPING #SKILLS - BUILDING #FUTURES Skills Development is a priority element to comply with in the B-BBEE codes - but  why is Skills Development important? Skills Development is an essential element toward the promotion of economic growth and social development by creating a more skilled and diverse workforce. Shortage of skills is perhaps the most crucial factor holding back growth countrywide, and the most effective solution is for companies themselves to invest in training and skills development directly.   #UpskillingourPeople That’s why Cargo Carriers is really enforcing training and skills development. There is most certainly a shortage of qualified diesel mechanics and when you do find them, they come at an extremely high cost. So, the apprenticeship programmes that we are funding can only prove fruitful in the future.   Since the first intake of apprenticeships was initiated in 2010, our apprenticeship programme has seen continued growth. From our first apprentices that qualified in 2014 up to 2022, we qualified 31 people in the Diesel mechanic field.   Last year  August 2023, we had  an intake of 5x first-year apprentices – 2 males and 3 females;  3x second-year apprentices – 1 male and 2 female (moving into 3rd year); 5x fourth-year apprentices : 4 males and 1 female (qualifying October 2024).   There is no doubt that in recognising the skills shortage within the transport and logistics industry, particularly with respect to technical staff, Cargo Carriers is positively contributing to sustaining and improving the availability of these scarce resources.   We are confident that our continuous training and skills development initiatives will bolster our business and the industry as a whole creating opportunities for our people in terms of their ability to perform and grow.   The Group continues to focus on the development of its greatest asset, its employees!
