Of course Lunda is known for their award-winning and iconic major river crossing projects, but we're in the business of connecting on a smaller scale, too. The Bridges of Mower County project involved the replacement of four rural bridges on I-90 through Austin, Minnesota: the Dobbins Creek Bridge, the Business Loop Flyover Bridge, and the eastbound and westbound bridges at Turtle Creek. Work also included grading, concrete and bituminous pavement, utilities, and hydraulics. Additionally, as a design-build project, the scope included bridge design, structure design, hydraulic, and roadway design. Project challenges included complex traffic control and staging on high-speed, high-volume roadways; construction in and near environmentally sensitive areas; and challenging subsurface conditions. The project also required collaboration and cooperation with multiple local stakeholders. For properties adjacent to the construction activities, the team coordinated with businesses and residents, conducting pre-condition surveys and vibration monitoring services. Three of the structures were located over impaired waters and Lunda developed and implemented an extensive environmental management plan during construction activities. An environmental team was assigned, with key individuals responsible for stopping work if necessary, and every individual on the project was charged with the responsibility to alert the team and project management of any environmental concerns. This proved critical when an unforeseen scour hole below an old culvert outfall (undiscoverable during design or initial construction) caused the failure of an aggregate retaining structure. Lunda issued a stop work order and worked with MnDOT, the DNR, and the engineer, to develop and implement a solution, keeping the project on schedule and budget.
