🌡 Did you know that the downhill skiing industry accounts for about $1.4 billion per year for total ski area revenues in Canada, and is a multi-billion-dollar industry globally? What do warming winters mean for the skiing industry? For analysts and researchers looking into these impacts, the “Explore by Location” page on ClimateData.ca provides data on how the number of “frost days” or days below zero are expected to change under different emission scenarios, a key indicator of how long the skiing season is expected to be in the future. This information can be used for example to help predict how much artificial snow a ski resort might need to produce in the coming decades and whether more investments are needed. #ClimateChangeCanada #WinterSports

#BLOG20: THE PERFECT GLIDE Ever thought about how lubrication is like water skiing? 🚤 Just like skiers need the right conditions to glide smoothly, machines need the right lubrication! Imagine the skis as machine surfaces and the water as the lubricant. At first, there's contact with the sand (boundary lubrication), then less contact as speed increases (mixed lubrication), until the skier rises and hydroplanes (hydrodynamic lubrication). Similarly, machine surfaces may look smooth, but tiny peaks cause friction. Lubricants reduce this wear. Understanding these concepts helps us explain how a plain journal bearing works. Just like the skier and water, it's all about creating the perfect glide!
