Walmart CEO Doug McMillon started his career near the bottom. Now he's the executive at the top of the #Global500, our annual list of the world’s largest companies. Although he planned to attend a prestigious business school, he got rejected from Harvard, Stanford, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. When he joined Walmart in 1984, his job was to unload trailers in a warehouse. On his first day, he even rear-ended his boss’s car, he told students during this year’s commencement address at the University of Arkansas. Yet McMillon persevered, and worked his way up the ranks during a 33-year career at Walmart. Read more: bit.ly/4aPG4HG

Woohoo Walmart! We made Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work for List, and what I'm most proud of are the details of why. In essence, our people make the difference. This isn't just a tagline, it is the truth. As the article states, with the size of Walmart it can be hard to have a consistently positive work environment. So how did we make the list and have over 70% of associates say it is it a great workplace? We did it through our frontline associates caring about customers and each other, our frontline managers being servant leaders, using our scale to do the right thing as far as skills and career opportunities, and focusing on serving our associates, customers, and community. #TeamWalmart Side Note: I LOVE the picture the article uses because Associate to Driver is still one of my favorite programs we offer!

4 years of Phoenix 2 Retail - what a journey. When I first started back in January 2020, I had no idea where this was going to go, I just knew that I could make a real difference in the industry. Within three months of launching, we found ourselves in lockdown and so an already uncertain time became even more unpredictable but I wouldn’t change it for the world. We’ve gone on to make some huge moves since launching, from working with the likes of Tesco, Morrisons and Bookers to growing the team but it really does feel like we’re only just getting started. Thank you to everyone has supported us over the years, it doesn’t go unnoticed. Watch this space, the best is yet to come.

I started in retail at 18 years old- now turning 35 I spent almost 14 years at Walmart, moving up the ladder. Never once interviewed for a job up the climb. The challenge of working and planning such a complex company was exciting and rewarding. Never did I see myself leaving Walmart but life happens. Joining Ollies as a Store manager after needing to relocate back to Pa and again tried to climb the ladder. An Ollies Store Manager their mission is simple and clear. Plan your manifest, make room for the freight, crush it in 2 days, easy lets roll. I grew bored and moved over to District LP. Covering four states worth of stores and endless travel, this became clear I should of stayed running a store. Me sitting still and searching for internals was not my thing. Petco Store Manager- before training was over it knew it wasn’t for me. Took a jump based on the pay specifically. I knew this was not for me. As an animal lover the idea of being over animals sounded great, till you as the gm are the one cleaning the cages. Very limited hours due to volume size, with a stock price hovering under $2.00 Gabes Store Manager- Great bigger box than Ollies so time to roll again. More money so lets make the jump again. Five trucks a week, perfect lets plan some freight. If only it was that simple. Inconsistency with processes would be an understatement. I’m not sure if retail management is getting stale, or once you work for the giants of the world everything else seems less rewarding. Retail and retail management is surely changing.

Retail Today / Retail Renaissance: Wall Street and the Retail Industry are waiting patiently for tomorrow’s Costco earnings announcement. It’s a big deal! #costco How does Costco do it? Great Merchandising? Yes! Great Products? Yes! Great Service? Yes! #merchandising #products #service #shoppingexperience “BUT” it’s people-first, the “COSTCO WAY”, built around a “culture” that breeds success, nurtures talent and encourages leadership development. #peoplefirst #culture #sucess #talent #leadership Costco’s unique “culture” started with co-founder Jeff Sinegal, Costco’s CEO from 1983-2011. His leadership style was based on listening to associates and supporting their individual growth. Jeff retired in 2011, then handed the reins over to an “lifer” Graig Jehnek, who was CEO for the last 11 years. Earlier this year Ron Vachris was named CEO after 41 years at Costco! Ron’s a “lifer” who started as a forklift driver! My gut tells me, all three had the following characteristics, which lead to their success and Costco’s. #workethic #pride #coachable #socialskills 1) Ferocious Work Ethic 2) Intense Sense of Pride 3) Coachable 4) Fantastic Social Skills See in the comments: Costco associate benefits. #benefits Costco is the third largest retailer in the World. Sales of $240 Billion Dollars, out of 876 locations with over 316,000 associates. #costco #retail #retailindustry #organizationaldevelopment #leadershipdevelopment #retention #decication #loyalty #TopRetailExperts
