🛒 Shopping Carts. Let’s talk about them. We all use them. Sometimes, that place you’re supposed to put them in seem SO FAR AWAY 😫 that instead of walking those few steps, we place them wherever they won’t roll into our vehicle. Hmmm. I know, we’ve all done it. So, the other day I pulled into a parking spot at the local target. 🎯 As I look up, I see an elderly gentleman with low mobility trying to walk into the curb cut disability walkway. But he is blocked by two shopping carts. 🛒🛒 I sat in my car debating 🤔 if I should go over and help and risk assuming he can’t move them himself. As I sat there trying to figure out what to do, and I had just decided to go help as casually as possible, he was able to move them to the side and get by. The next time I went to this same target, the walkway was blocked, yet again. This time, I went and got the carts and brought them inside. I thought, be proactive Tiffany, not reactive. I ask of you his #DisabilityPride month is to think about how these little actions we take, or don’t take, can greatly impact someone’s ability to go buy toothpaste at your local Target. For me, this was an interesting demonstration of leveraging internal policies of inclusion within the workforce towards an initiative for inclusion and business opportunity. This video demonstrates how an accessible shopping cart is used. There is a woman in a wheelchair wheeling down an aisle in Costco with an accessible shopping cart attached to the front of her wheelchair. She has a service dog next to her on her left. Costco has introduced accessible shopping carts for people who use wheelchairs. While the goal of these shopping carts might be to promote a more independent shopping experience, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to improve their usability. We hope to see further enhancements made to this assistive tool as they make their way into more stores. We received approval to post this video with the aim of raising awareness about the creator and the important topics they discuss. Self-serve machines have become an ubiquitous way to place restaurant orders, buy transit tickets or purchase groceries. But for many consumers with disabilities, they are self-serve in name only. When grocery store employees ask Marcia Yale if she wants to use the self-checkout, she responds with her own question: “I say, ‘Well, do you want to use it?’” Yale, who is completely blind, can only use self-checkout machines and other self-serve kiosks independently if the machine reads out what is on the screen. Finding accessibility features on most self-serve machines is nearly impossible, she says. The only ones she can use are bank-issued automatic teller machines.  These machines often do not have features to make them accessible for consumers with disabilities, or consumers cannot find these features. Few guidelines exist about how to make self-serve machines accessible to consumers with disabilities. Each machine is different. Just because a blind individual knows how to turn on voice-over technology that reads out the words on an ATM screen does not mean they know how to access the same features at the self-checkout at the grocery store. A recent study from the University of Waterloo seeks to better understand the problems consumers with disabilities face when using self-serve machines, and how those barriers can be fixed. “We were really lacking the understanding of the experiences of people with disabilities and their usability concerns with these devices,” said Gaya Bin Noon, a PhD candidate in public health sciences and the study’s lead author.
