Inclusion Doesn’t Matter... Arguments against inclusion often stem from a narrow interpretation of its value, yet workplaces lacking inclusive practices also fail to achieve positive outcomes. EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) emerged in the mid-1960s alongside equal employment laws to facilitate the transition from segregation to integration in the workplace. Today, while women make up 72.3% of the UK workforce and hold 40% of FTSE 100 board positions, many from disadvantaged socio-economic and underrepresented ethnic backgrounds still face challenges reminiscent of the 1950s. Current inclusion and diversity practices are not evolving to meet the needs of the UK talent pool, leading to outdated strategies and ineffective outcomes. On this Juneteenth, we honor the end of slavery in the United States and recognize the ongoing journey toward equity and justice. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our workplaces. At HRM Services, we believe in fostering a work environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation, creativity, and success. As human resource professionals, we play a pivotal role in authentically supporting DEI by: - Developing policies and practices that support all employees and implementing them with a focus on equity. - Offering DEI training programs to educate and build awareness. - Facilitating open conversations about race, equity, and inclusion. - Implementing strategies to attract, hire, and retain diverse talent. Kickstarting an inclusion journey, Leidos added inclusion as a core value in January 2020, their team were unsure where to start, asking themselves: “How do we live that every day? What do we do with this?” We had pockets of good things happening and we had a number of people who were wanting to do more in that space.
