"Electric vehicles have seen a dizzying advance in the last decade, both in terms of market share and sophistication. To many, their increasing ubiquity is novel, and we get the sense that we are on the cusp of something new. Outside of niche engineering concepts or small cars for the die-hard environmentalist, electric vehicles were almost non-existent for most of our lives. None of us have ever shared the road with so many electric cars before. But what is surprising to many, including myself, is that there was a point in time when there were more electric cars on the roads than gas-powered cars. What we are witnessing is not the beginning of the age of EVs but a resurgence of an industry that has been dormant for almost a century..." This is one of my favorite demos! Using an RC car to show the principles that are applied to full scale EVs is just fun, but it also shows how DQ0 is a useful measurement in understanding how your 3-phase system is working. #EV #PowerElectronics

Crash tests: new truck fronts show potential to save lives Today on #RadioSweden (Sveriges Radio), Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and Vision Zero Academy’s Rikard Fredriksson is interviewed on #crashtests involving a new truck front prototype. The new truck front is softer and longer and therefore absorbs the energy better in head-on crashes with passenger cars – which today often result in fatalities. In the radio feature Rikard explains the potential this new truck front has to save lives. Head-on crashes with #heavytrucks are one of the biggest #VisionZero challenges, as they are overrepresented in the statistics on fatal road crashes. Heavy trucks represent only 6% of the mileage on Swedish roads, but they are involved in about 20% of the fatal crashes. The prototype truck front is currently being developed at Chalmers University of Technology. I have seen this article few hours ago posted by my friend and former colleague Mohamed Saleh. And couldn’t resist to reshare it. I would park any debate on the green mobility, cars vs alternatives way of transportation, or the safety procedures and the systems availability rules which governates other segments of the industry. Half of my LinkedIn connections were exposed to the concept of four nines mandatory in the rail systems or the five nines imposed by the air traffic control for example. We like it or not, the cars and the road traffic will still be part of our lives for next generations, and initiative like Vision Zero are a must to create a safer environment. PS. Also quoting my favourite part of the article: ‘One of the key actions that came from Vision Zero was to conduct internal investigations of every fatal road collision in Sweden in parallel to any criminal investigation. The pattern that began to emerge revealed that crash victims were not, as many in the road transport sector, assumed – drunk and irresponsible drivers. For the most part, they were people who made small mistakes within a system that had no margin for error.’ #transportation #safety #innovation

It is good to be an old dog and learn new tricks. Or in this case, insight and intelligence, both of which I gained listening to John Voelcker who should be everyone’s voice of reason in this area. Besides, John likes slow, goody Brit cars and what is not to love about that?! #EV #electriccars #sustainability #sustainabilitymatters
John Voelcker talks about EV time and how far EV’s evolution has come throughout the years.
