When do you need to wear hearing protection? Hearing protection should be provided when the noise level within the working environment cannot be suitably controlled with other means. However, hearing protection should not be used in isolation. Technical and organisational means of noise reduction must always be considered first, where possible. Hearing protection is mandatory within an environment where the noise level is about 85db(A) (time weighted average). Hearing protection zones and signage to indicate the mandatory use of hearing protection must also be implemented. It is important that you select hearing protection that is suitable for our working environment. Hearing protection that does not offer enough noise reduction will not suitably protect the hearing and ma lead to issues such as hearing loss and tinnitus. However, issuing hearing protection that offers too much noise reduction can also be dangerous and may result in alarm systems, such as the fire alarm, being missed. If you would like any further information, or support with identifying any hearing protection requirements, please feel free to get in touch. #YourTrustedSafetyTeam #HealthandSafety #HearingProtection

May Is Better Hearing Month Noise-Induced Hearing Loss is 100% preventable, but most people are unaware of the damage until it is too late. Early warning signs of hearing loss include ears feeling plugged throughout the day, trouble understanding telephone conversations, and ringing in the ears. Remember, personal hearing protection devices are required if you are exposed to 85 decibels or more averaged over an 8-hour period. At S. W. Cole, we train all our new employees on hearing conservation and provide our team members with personal hearing protection devices to make sure they have the knowledge and equipment to protect their hearing on the job. #betterhearingmonth

🎧 October is National Protect Your Hearing Month! 🎧 Did you know noise-induced hearing loss affects millions? Over 26 million Americans suffer from it, often caused by everyday sounds like lawnmowers (90 dB) or concerts (115 dB)! Hearing protection helps keep you safe when working in noisy areas. If you must shout and you're within 2-3 feet of a coworker, hearing protection is probably needed. To better understand the noise level in an area, use a noise dosimeter to get a reading of the decibels. This will tell you how loud the noise is in the space. Any reading over 85 dB can damage your hearing if you are not wearing the proper hearing protection. 🎧 Wear your gear, protect your ears. 🎧 #ActionStartsWithMe #SafetyFirst

Hearing Conservation in the Workplace: A Crucial but Overlooked Aspect Ensuring that the dBA readings in your workplace are within acceptable limits is essential for hearing conservation. While these guidelines are helpful, individual susceptibility to hearing loss varies. Some individuals may experience hearing damage at just 82 dBA. As someone profoundly hard of hearing due to my service in the Canadian Armed Forces, I understand firsthand the far-reaching impacts of hearing loss. It affects not only personal relationships and family life but also employment. I have delivered several talks addressing how hearing loss impacts a persons life, discussing topics often overlooked or ignored medical by professionals. Many who initially resist wearing hearing protection because it's "uncomfortable", quickly change their minds after hearing my experiences. In closing, if you dislike the feel of foam earplugs, you will surely dislike hearing aids. Please protect your hearing.
