Yesterday's US Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on evolving vehicle technologies and consumer choice highlights ongoing Congressional interest in protecting consumers' right to choose where and with what parts their vehicles are repaired and maintained. This report underscores the critical conversations taking place about vehicle data access and the implications for both repairers and consumers. As stakeholders in the vibrant independent aftermarket ecosystem, we know it's imperative that all parties — including suppliers, independent repair shops, and consumers — have access to necessary data and the ability to make informed choices about vehicle maintenance and repair. MEMA will continue to support consumer rights and foster innovation within our industry. #REPAIRAct #R2R

All new cars and trucks, and most vehicles manufactured after 2005, are equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). TPMS’s were mandated by the federal government in an attempt to address the many detrimental effects of a nation of under inflated tires. Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems typically consist of sensing devices mounted inside of each tire on a so equipped vehicle that signal a receiver inside the cabin, illuminating a warning light on the dashboard whenever the tire pressure in any tire drops below a pre-established level. While well intended, TPMS systems can do more harm than good and create a false sense of security. Our main gripe with these systems is that the government mandate only requires the driver to be warned when the tire pressure drops to a level that is 25% below the manufacturer’s recommended pressure value. In other words, a tire can lose up to 25% of its pressure before the system warns you. For example, a tire that should be inflated to 30 psi can drop all the way to 22 psi before the driver is warned that the tire pressure is low. This is a critical flaw in these systems as it only takes a few pounds to seriously affect the safety and performance of a tire…and your pocketbook. Just remember: while an illuminated “Check Tire" light is probably a sure indication that you have an underinflated tire, a non-illuminated light DOES NOT indicate your tires are properly inflated. Here’s an interesting but not definitive comparison. Driver Travis Gco (Travis Lauer) Purple Haze Volvo VNL 760 I-Torque spec D13TC GEN 2 455HP/1850TQ @900 RPM 14 speed OD I-Shift, Volvo Adaptive loading 6x2 DANA S175 drive axle with accompanying DANA driveline components Appropriate Michelin Tires in all positions for 6x2 applications DAVCO replaced with AirDog by PureFlow Technologies, Inc. Driver Joel Morrow Boo-Berry Volvo VNL 760 I-Torque spec D13TC GEN2 425HP / 1750TQ @900 RPM 13 speed OD I-Shift, traditional 6x4 Meritor drive axle arrangement and drive line components Appropriate Bridgestone dual low rolling resistance tires in all positions for a 6x4 Essentially stock in all regards with no modifications to improve mpg Each load was approximately 10,000 lbs in the trailer Each trailer was very comparable in terms of spec’s and tires (Schneider spec) Terrain, weather, and traffic were similar but not exact Keep in mind Purple Haze is fully broke in so add .7 mpg to Boo-Berries mpg total if you like. This is just one of similar specific comparisons and is by no means definitive Both trucks are being tracked by Alec Costerus via Kevin Rutherfords Fuel gauges, Volvo Connect, and on board telematics to ensure accurate data. Stay tuned for more comparisons and data analysis over the coming weeks and months Both trucks performed exceptionally well this round seems to have went to Travis Lauer and Purple Haze (6x2) Although I’d expect Boo-Berry (6x4) to improve as the truck continues to break in😟✌️😬😎
