Love Brendan Aronson and super excited to hear him and Paul Lawrence jam on this topic. I've been wrestling with this issue of veteran underemployment for some months now... Career exploration is the key here in my opinion. Micro-internships and other opportunities to really feel out one's preferred career is the first step, even before translating military skills or deciding which degree to obtain. On that topic, underemployment is a broader issue with college graduates as well. (Link in Comments) Unfortunately the timeline for the typical military transition is far too short for a servicemember to do this exploration. Even skillbridge falls short if the individual is given one role for 6 months. Which is one reason I'm a huge fan of Jason and the paradigm shift of "PreVeteran". Imagine a micro-skillbridge where a Navy Hospital Corpsman with 6 years of service and 2 years left on an enlistment could spend two weeks in a hospital, then a few months later two weeks in a corporate setting, then a few months later two weeks helping to install solar panels. By the time they're eligible for skillbridge they have a much better understanding of their preferred career path. As a Career Counselor to over 1,000 Navy Sailors at one point, I know exactly the emotional turmoil that occurs when a Sailor is deciding whether to stay or go. In fact, Career Counselors are measured on retention, so there was little incentive for me to encourage career exploration. With a sea of voices telling you to stay, it takes courage to go. When you have made that choice, you're put in a generic pipeline of (let's be honest) relatively uninspired content meant to "reorient" you to the private sector. What if the military were measured on gainful employment? (Link in Comments) What if the military used the fact that military service is a catalyst for career trajectory as a recruiting tool? "Every veteran a recruiter" is much easier to embrace when veterans articulate the ways in which the military set them up for success post-service. And yet, veterans are chronically underemployed... #veteranjobs #veterancareers #futurestate

There is a difference between hiring a Veterans with #industryexperience and #transitioningservicemembers. Veterans with IE historically have had an unemployment rate a full percentage lower than their non-Veteran peers. So the population of #veterans that look like me - is COMPETITIVE! That's why leaning into targeting the 240K people who leave their #activeduty service is vital to a successful #veteranhiring program. All of those Veterans with IE - their #transferableskills and #technicalskills are cloned in the military. By not targeting Veterans via #engagement or #branding, you're missing out on finding the gems in your current organization, and molding them into the future of your company. #veteranshelpingveterans #veteranhiring
