𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 Color Line has partnered with Wärtsilä to upgrade the exhaust treatment systems on four of its vessels, aiming to enhance performance and meet sustainability goals. The upgrade involves adding closed-loop functionality to the existing open-loop scrubbers, enabling better control over emissions and ensuring compliance with tightening environmental regulations. Wartsila’s hybrid scrubber systems, which significantly reduce sulfur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and particulate matter emissions, will be installed on two large Ro-Pax and two high-speed Ro-Pax vessels operating between Norway, Denmark, and Germany. The project, set to begin in late 2024, aligns with Color Line’s commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of its operations. Methanol-fueled #vessels are on the water today, and more are on the way. The Methanol Institute tracks global methanol vessel announcements, which are highlighted here. Beginning with the launch of the Stena Germanica in 2015 and the introduction of 11 chemical tankers by Methanex Waterfront Shipping in 2016-2019, and now MI member CMA CGM order of six 15,000 TEU dualfuel methanol-powered containerships, and Ocean Network Express (ONE) #shipbuilding contracts with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Nihon Shipyard to construct five 13,700 teu vessels each, all for delivery in 2025.* As you will see here, there is a broad range of methanol-fueled vessels including pilot boats, tug/push boats, ferries, cruise ships, superyachts, crew transfer vessels, lift and multi-purpose ships. Methanol is one of the primary alternative fuel choices for the shipping industry to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Business Times’ Sharanya Pillai writes about the ongoing transition to green fuels in the maritime industry, exploring the prospects of retrofitting ships to run on near zero-carbon fuels in the coming years. She notes, however, that the overall market opportunity may be “constrained by cost and design challenges”. Sharing our insights with Pillai, our CEO, Professor Lynn Loo likened retrofitting a vessel to "taking a house and gutting it, and then trying to fit it around your requirements". It is easier to start from scratch. The article also cited the GCMD-BCG Global Maritime Survey that reveals most respondents are unlikely to retrofit vessels older than ten years. This translates into at least 63% of the existing fleet that will likely never use future fuels such as ammonia or methanol. “Given these challenges, the GCMD-BCG report said lower-hanging fruit might lie in interim decarbonisation solutions - including the use of ‘drop-in fuels’ such as biofuels – so-called because ship engines need no modifications for their use – as well as the installation of onboard carbon capture technologies,” Pillai further reported. Prof Loo also highlighted that the world has been through past fuel transitions before and that we have to look at it both from a perspective of risk and opportunity. “The world took about a century to transition from mostly coal-based energy to oil. “In the next transition, we want to go from oil to something else... in a few decades,” she said.
