This book excerpt by Warwick Anderson is really worth some reflection. Medical researchers should “take ownership” to protect science from fraudulent behaviour. I suggest they start by acknowledging the limitations own their own skills. E.g. MDs who are highly qualified therapeutic specialists may very well be way below average reviewers of biostatistical analyses, post-hoc data torture and p-hacking fishing expeditions in articles submitted for review. This leaves the peer review proces with a serious credibility problem. Publishers and editors must step up and provide biostatistical scrutiny with license to reject manuscripts if the numbers do not add up to the wording of the manuscript. This should be done prior to peer review (which publishers after all are getting for free) to improve the quality of published articles and eventually - hopefully enabling better replication rates of science. "Medical research is not a profession, even though it demands a high level of professionalism. Anyone can call themselves a medical researcher. There are no processes that affirm an individual has reached some agreed level of expertise, proficiency and reliability. There is no specific training and no accreditation program. There is no requirement to learn a designated set of skills and knowledge, such as the proper use of statistics, what good research practices are or what the ethical obligations are. There is no equivalent of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the national- and state-based medical boards. There is no need for registration and demonstration of training. There is not even a set of stated principles that we expect every medical researcher to share."
