Part of commemorating International Youth Day is celebrating the potential of youth as changemakers in tackling today’s global challenges such as #climatechange. This morning Wasafiri's Brenda Mareri spoke on 'Understanding Food Systems and Climate Change' at the Local Conference of Youth in Nairobi. Bumping into fellows from the African Food Fellowship was a happy bonus. "It was a blast celebrating International Youth Day in Kenya with some Kenyan fellows at the Local Conference of Youth workshop hosted in Nairobi today. #AFFfellows are change makers." - Brenda. In Africa 4.0, we ask: What role must the next generation play in this endeavor for food sovereignty and rural economic development?

SOVEREIGNTY The 5th Pan-African Congress (Manchester, 1945) was a benchmark for Africa 3.0. the current era of political sovereignty in Africa; a quest for self-government and decolonization in a post-WWII world order. Almost 80 years later, the state of African sovereignty is replete with asterisks and question marks. The ‘divide and conquer’ strategies of the colonizers extended into the post-colonial leadership, raising questions as to who is actually in control. Food sovereignty, the right of a people to sustainably control their own food and agricultural systems, is a critical dimension to community Health and Wealth. As we conclude the Civil Society Conference at the United Nations, there is much to take away and act upon. Delegates such as Tamara Kahuthia and Clive Donnley played integral roles in promoting inclusivity to advance a sustainable future. The recent floods in Kenya and East Africa have raised a scientific inquiry that initiates a broader discussion on climate change. The presence of the President of Kenya, His Excellency William Samoei Ruto, and the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the event underscored its significance. President Ruto emphasized the role of civil society in holding governments accountable to ensure they prioritize the well-being of their citizens. As we prepare for the Summit of the Future, it is crucial for the youth to engage more actively and vocalize the challenges faced by civil society. Increased representation will foster grassroots development, which is essential in the global south. The region harbors innovative ideas and solutions to address these challenges. #2024UNCSC #2022Initiative

🌍 Climate change is threatening livelihoods worldwide. To build a sustainable future and achieve the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals, we need major socio-ecological changes. This isn't just about policies and science; it requires shifts in our mindsets and behaviours. Religious communities play a vital role in this transformation. They shape our values and can drive socio-ecological change. 📚 The newest #GlobethicsPublication, edited by Philipp Öhlmann and Juliane Stork, explores the role of religious communities in promoting ecological sustainability, with a focus on Southern Africa. it's a valuable resource for scholars, students, faith-based organisations, policymakers, and NGOs. 🌱 Download the book for free to learn more on religion and ecological sustainability in Southern Africa and beyond 🔗https://lnkd.in/dzAhzy7B #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ReligiousCommunities #SouthernAfrica #Publication

We cannot thrive and succeed in Africa if we do not prioritise our affairs from other parts of the world. If we have not yet understood that bringing our challenges to the table in Africa and looking for the solution is our responsibility. This understanding will make many things easier for us in Africa. When we start seeing African led innovations as the best choice for us. when we beging to look for goods to trade among ourselves. These are the changes we desire to see among ourselves, these are the only ways we can see the changes happen. Day 2, I attended an insightful session on "The Role of Youth Engagement in Climate Policy Implementation," hosted by Nigeria Youth SDGs Network and supported by Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany. Led by Oluwatosin Ajide, MBA, the session explored the critical climate challenges we face—rising temperatures, desertification, flooding, coastal erosion, deforestation, and their impact on agriculture and livelihoods. We delved into Nigeria’s climate policy response, including the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the National Youth Policy (2019), and the vital role young people play in driving climate action through advocacy, innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. Youth engagement is crucial in policy implementation through: - Advocacy for stronger policies - Community involvement - Capacity building - Harnessing innovation for sustainable solutions This session reinforced my belief that empowered youth are central to addressing climate challenges and achieving a sustainable future. Let’s keep pushing for meaningful involvement and policy impact! #ClimateActionforStrongerNaija #YouthEngagement #SustainableFuture #Nigeria
