Collins Otieno from Hivos led a session on the Climate Finance Agenda at COP and the national level, covering various financing instruments. The climate finance landscape is shaped by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Aligning national policies with these global mechanisms is key to securing and utilizing climate funds effectively, guided by policies like the Climate Change Act and the national climate change strategy. The GCF focuses on reducing vulnerability and building resilience, but there's a need to accelerate its implementation to benefit communities. The GEF, through its LDCF and SCCF sub-funds, supports adaptation and technology for the most vulnerable nations. Share your experience with these climate finance mechanisms in the comments below. Over the past few months, Kenyan youth with their smartphones have proved to be a force to be reckoned with! Yesterday during the Building a Climate-Resilient Future for Young People session facilitated by Valentine Maina of VSOKenya, youth in Kilifi were challenged to actively participate in public participation forums, especially the upcoming ones on The different CIDPs ( County Integrated Development Plan) We were also encouraged to closely examine these key bills: 1⃣The Livestock Bill 2024 2⃣The Seed and Plant Varieties Act 3️⃣The Mung Beans Bill 4️⃣ Carbon Credit Trading and Benefit Sharing Bill, 2023. 5️⃣ The Natural Resources Benefit Sharing Bill, 2022. We are curious to hear from you. Have you read through any of them? What are your key takeaways and concerns? YOUNGO #LCOYKE2024 #JustClimateAction

Such an immense pleasure participating in an event themed "Empowering Kenyan Youth for Sustainable Food Systems and Climate Action" organized by LCOY-KENYA As the climate crisis deepens, it’s increasingly clear that our generation must take the lead in implementing and advocating for Agroecology—an approach that harmonizes agriculture with ecological principles to create sustainable and equitable food systems. Agroecology is not just a method of farming; it’s a transformative movement that empowers communities, enhances biodiversity, and ensures food sovereignty. We , should take up these spaces!. During the event, I had the opportunity to present practical products from my agroforestry initiatives in my first-ever mini exhibition. This platform allowed me to demonstrate how innovative agroforestry practices can contribute to both ecological restoration and sustainable livelihoods. It was a rewarding experience to see the interest and enthusiasm for Agroecology among my peers and to be part of a larger movement that is driving real change. I am running this initiative through my start up @tree_mendouske To mark youth day, my message is that we can create food systems that are not only productive but also resilient and equitable, ensuring a better future for all. #Agroecology #YouthLeadership #genz #ClimateAction #FoodSystems #Agroforestry #youthday Beatrice Wambui . UN Global Food Systems Youth Leader | Climate Change & Food Systems Communications Consultant | Columnist | Legislative & Policy Researcher for MP in Kenya.

Having spent a decade working within policy-making environments, I can attest that the greatest obstacle to sustainable development is the fragmented and siloed implementation of policies. On #InternationalYouthDay2024, I had the privilege of discussing with young people why building collective intelligence and adopting a systemic approach is crucial for addressing challenges in food systems. I illustrated this point using the story from Godfrey John Saxe's poem "The Elephant and the Six Blind Men." Each blind man, having touched only one part of the elephant, described it differently, demonstrating how incomplete perspectives can lead to misunderstandings. As we tackle food systems challenges, it is essential to recognize that diverse viewpoints—shaped by different cultures, environments, and experiences—must be integrated to form a comprehensive understanding. This is where the wisdom of the crowd's concept comes in handy especially in enhancing collaboration and cooperation. I am grateful to the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, LCOY-KENYA, #WorldFoodForum and other partners for their support in organizing the successful 2024 Youth Day. Special thanks to Stefanos Fotiou , Dr. Nicole De Paula #PriscillaMuiruri Victor Muiru Brenda Mareri Maureen Muketha Dorah Momanyi Elizabeth Mwende GE EBK, GIEK, MEIK Ruth Magak Apollo Karuga, RD. for joining and sharing insights. Together with effective #ClimateAction we can #EndPoverty and ensure #ZeroHunger in the world.
