We are thrilled to announce that Washington Trust Bank has donated $5,000 to SEATTLE NATIVITY SCHOOL to fund scholarships for families living below the poverty line. Seattle Nativity School is a Catholic, Jesuit-endorsed STEM middle school committed to breaking the cycle of poverty through education that nourishes souls and ignites leaders for love and service. A Seattle Nativity School 8th grader and council leader, who will be attending Seattle Preparatory School this fall, provided John Borland and Eleanor Rasmussen a brief tour before they met with Fr. McDougall, President. “We are grateful for such a generous gift from Washington Trust Bank and the opportunities they have provided to learn more about Community Reinvestment Act grants. Thank you for welcoming Seattle Nativity School into the Washington Trust community!” – Judy Shafer, Director of Development, Seattle Nativity School. #CommunityImpact #SeattleNativitySchool #STEMEducation

Day One of the Junior League Little Black Dress Initiative for poverty awareness.🏴 Here are some of the hard truths for Montgomery County: ✖️ 75,000 residents are considered food insecure. ✖️ 55,000 of those people live below the poverty line. ($30,000 for a family of four.) ✖️The largest demographic of the food insecure are women and children. *For those in my LinkedIn network who aren’t from this area. Montgomery County is the county above Houston (Harris County).* Choosing what to wear to work and what items we’d like to eat for breakfast is a luxury we take for granted. ‼️ For the next week, I will be wearing the same black dress to put myself into the shoes of those who don’t have the option to wear something different every day. Last year, the Junior League of The Woodlands raised $66,000 of funds to be exclusively used in poverty programs surrounding Montgomery County.💪 This year we are looking to raise more. If you feel drawn to donate, any amount is encouraged: https://lnkd.in/gGuMFB75 — Still curious about where your donations go? Today’s highlight is: Keys to Learning, one of MANY Junior League of The Woodlands initiatives, distributed over 464 books at their annual Literacy Carnival in 2023. A small $20 donation puts ✋ books in the hands of local elementary children. #womenbuildingbettercommunities #lbd #onedress

“Why Should I support Catholic World Mission?” There are a ton of charities in the world. Why support Catholic World Mission? ✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️ The Catholic World Mission difference: 1. Unlike a lot of large nonprofits, we don’t partner with foreign governments. That means we have no limitations on evangelization and living our Catholic values. 2. Unlike a lot of large nonprofits, we partner directly with priests and nuns in the poorest communities. That allows us to find local solutions to local problems. 3. Unlike a lot of large nonprofits, we make a point to provide updates on our projects. It’s important that our supporters understand how they are making an impact! 4. Unlike a lot of large nonprofits, we encourage self sufficiency by insisting on community engagement. We believe in a hand up - not a handout. 5. Unlike a lot of large nonprofits, we believe in uplifting families from BOTH material AND spiritual poverty. Want to join our Catholic World Mission family and live your Faith today? Writer. Reader. Gardener. 🌳 🐇 ☕️ 🐿️ 🧁 🌿 📚 Nurturing the imaginations of today’s readers ... and tomorrow’s. Learn more at ReadPurr.com
Did you know that half of U.S. adults cannot read a book at an 8th grade level? Or that nearly half of U.S. adults don’t read a single book in a year? Or that 44 million Americans are unable to read a simple story to their children? For these reasons and more, it is vital that we set children up for a lifetime of literacy by encouraging them to read — and to enjoy reading — at a young age. Whether it’s physical books or money, I would encourage you to support your local public library, and to donate to literacy-focused charities. Here at Read+Purr (because I believe that everyone, no matter their age or circumstances, deserves to experience the blissful escape — the comfort, the endless possibilities, and especially the hope — that comes from getting lost in a good story), we donate to the International Book Project. I earmark our donations, in fact, for the IBP’s Books in the Bluegrass program, which gives free books to low-income and refugee children and their families in central Kentucky. Since the IBP was founded in 1966, it’s given more than 7 million books to recipients here in the Bluegrass and in 167 other countries. * * * Speaking of physical books … In case you missed the actual day but would like to participate anyway, April 14th was National Donate a Book Day. This, of course, is one of those “holidays” that can be celebrated on any day, not just the designated one. Do you have a pile of books that you no longer want on your own shelves? Here are a few ideas of where to donate them … Give them to your local public library (most libraries will accept book donations for their own shelves, or for book sales to benefit the library). Donate them to any of your local child- or literacy-focused charities that accept book donations. Mail them to the Prison Book Program (visit PrisonBookProgram[dot]org to learn more). Give them to a local thrift store. As an example: not all locations do, but our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts and sells books. Of course, you can also pass your I’m-not-keeping-them books along to friends or family who might enjoy them … or stash them in a Little Free Library box … or (if it’s where you acquired them in the first place) return them to your local library. 😉
