Welcome to the WA Space Grant team Brenda Martinez! Brenda’s values of equity, mentorship, and advocacy are fueled by the recognition that not all communities have the same access to resources and education. Her work uplifts BIPOC students and creates opportunities and access to resources when they might not be there so that all individuals have an educational environment where they can be authentic and thrive. She has been successful across many roles in implementing programs that address the systemic barriers in educational settings and beyond. We are so thrilled to have you apart of our community 😊

Founder/CEO | Nyanam Widows Rising; PhD SD4H Fellow | UCSF/Maseno University. I desire to see Africa where widows thrive.
We are thrilled to partner with SFF to advance the human, social, health and economic rights of widows in Kenya. Access and ownership of property, especially land, is one of the most violated economic rights of widows. As we start 2024, Nyanam widows will be - critically analyzing their experiences with land since widowhood - increasing their awareness on their land rights and process for land ownership - designing and implementing social action projects to improve their land ownership At societal level, much needs to change to advance women’s land rights. The practice that women have no voice on land matters should stop The practice that land is registered only in the names of male family members should stop The practice of denying childless widows land should stop
Do you know what makes the first Wednesday of 2024 a thousand times better?! 😜 Welcoming excellent partners like Nyanam Widows Rising to our family. Please show them some love! 💚 Nyanam is a restorative justice organization preparing widows to lead positive community transformation through holistic programs in leadership, health, livelihoods and economic empowerment, justice and human rights, and youth education. Why do we love them? 🤓 Nyanam centers all of its programs on the widows’ voices and needs. Their paralegal training is integral to empowering widows to understand their rights and advocate for themselves in the justice system. Here is a short clip of a non-sequential circle where we ask participants what they know about RP. We use circles very deliberately in our training to build community and practice the process in real time. We intentionally use this prompt, "What if anything do you know about Restorative Practices?” to demonstrate how circles and their prompts, can also serve as formative assessment tools. After walking around and hearing participants share, I am able to call back on their knowledge; demonstrating to participants, the formative assessment power of circles. This strategy helps "debunk" the narrative that circles are purely "touchy-feely community building tools." #RestorativePractices #RestorativeCircles #RestorativeLeadership #RestorativeJustice #RestorativeLeadershipConsulting #RLC International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP) Graduate School New Jersey Department of Education New Jersey Association of Educational Leaders New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association - NJPSA NJAMLE AMLE United States Forum on Restorative Justice (USFRJ) Harvard Graduate School of Education

5 Commandments for Effective Youth Engagement At Pawlehouse Company, we have learnt that young people ignore causes that ignore them - those that tell them what to do. Those that frame them as vulnerable and needing 'empowerment'. As the largest cohort in history, young people remain the most formidable agents of change, at scale and speed. We have simplified our lessons into 5 commandments when it comes to persuading them to rally behind a cause. Let us know what you think. https://lnkd.in/d7uXEj-F

Community, It's been four years since our country embarked on a much overdue reckoning on race in this county. So many commitments, committee, task-forces, councils, and entirely new positions were created. My question for you is- WHERE ARE WE NOW? I invite you to engage in these questions to reflect on how far we've come, and how far we still have to go 1. In what ways has my awareness of inequity grown since 2020? 2. In what ways have my beliefs and values changed in what ways have I grown, and developed since 2020? 3. What is something I'm proud to have accomplished in regards to social justice since 2020 personally? What has my organization accomplished? 4. What are some things that I still want to explore and learn more about? What are some areas of growth I still see for my organization? "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." -James Baldwin

Jewish organizations tend to be a bit "heimish". How would I translate heimish? Relaxed, unofficial, homey, mom and pop. This comes from a great place. It stems from good people just wanting to do good. But eventually that needs to change. At a certain point in an organizations growth, they become too large for that. They're dealing with large sums of money, serious issues, and complex situations. The "heimish" approach no longer serves them, it hampers them. Is your organization at this point? ______ ATT is Chicago’s central agency for enhancing Jewish education through professional development, courses, funding & advocacy.
