Last week, UNICEF and World Health Organization released their latest report on #water, #sanitation and #hygiene progress in schools. We are not where we need to be. We believe systems strengthening--as as an organization, as part of the One For All alliance, as a Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership partner--is vital for accelerating change. This week, South Sudan signed a Compact on Water and Sanitation as part of SWA's Heads of State Initiative. Along with plans for increased funding for water and sanitation services, the Compact also aims to make the country Open Defecation Free by 2030. Here, our One For All influence leaders explain why this is so important for all the countries we work within: https://lnkd.in/eiHPRKUk Melissa Revotskie David DeArmey John Butterworth

Our world has lots of problems so before we start a water war you should know that clean healthy water for all has its challenges, some African countries have limited water because of climate change or poor infrastructure or their growing populations and contamination from untreated runoff. In Asia rapid industrialisation and population growth is putting a strain on their water and in Latin America unequal distribution of water and poor infrastructure has left many without clean water. Even in developed nations there are challenges like ageing infrastructure and industrial pollution. The UN sustainable goals target healthy water and sanitation for all by 2030. The World Health Organisation has guidelines and technical assistance to improve water quality and sanitation. UNICEF works with governments and partners to provide clean water and hygiene programs for children around the world. The Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide piped drinking water for every rural household in India by the end of 2024. Ethiopia has a successful collaboration between the government and NGOs improving sanitation and hygiene in its rural areas. The 14th Annual CSO’s Wash Forum #WASH ends with renewed commitment towards improving universal coverage of WASH for all. The three-day 14th Annual Civil Society Organization’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Forum #WASH ended today at Golf Course Hotel, Kampala with renewed commitment to collaborate more, seek to address funding gaps, implement effective business models and innovate solutions to address WASH challenges #CSOFORUM2024. The theme of the Forum was 'WASH': the cornerstone for achieving the national development plan (NDP)1V objectives. The forum brought together representatives of government, civil society organizations, private sector, partners and participants who shared knowledge, experiences and brainstormed on the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) issues slowing progress towards achievement of universal coverage of the WASH sector in the country. Speaking at the closing of the Forum the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water & Environment Alfred Okidi stressed the critical need for close collaboration across all sectors to address challenges of #WASH. He said rapid urbanization, climate change and population growth threaten gains so far made in the WASH sector. Mr Okidi commended all partners for their dedication to improve the WASH sector in the country and their efforts towards ensuring universal coverage of water, sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030. Mr Okidi launched the WASH awards and appreciated Uganda Water and Sanitation Network (UWASNET) and partners for the initiation of the awards, calling for inclusion of a special category to recognize youth led innovations. The Head of Austrian Embassy Development Cooperation Office in Uganda Dr. Katja Yvonne Kerschbaumer commended UWASNET for organizing the event saying the forum helps CSOs interact, reflect and assess their performance. She however said despite civil society organizations doing so much valuable work and generating a lot of data on issues affecting communities where they operate, they are not very effective in sharing information with government to help improve public services. The Executive Director UWASNET Yunia Musaazi appreciated all who attended the event for engaging in insightful engagements aimed at improving the WASH sector. She said through close collaboration and appreciation of those contributing to the improvement of the sector, more gains will be made. She also said the Wash Awards will help recognize those who do good in the WASH sector and also contribute to improvement of livelihoods especially the vulnerable communities.

This week we celebrate the signing of the South Sudan Presidential Compact for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene by President Salva Kiir Mayardit. Congratulations to leaders in the government and partner agencies, UNICEF, the Netherlands government as well as Civil Society in South Sudan for working together to bring this ambitious compact to life. The compact has five high-level commitments: 1. Provision of enabling environment for the WASH sector through identification of policy gaps, development and review of policies, strategies and guidelines, as well as ensure that the Water Bill of 2015 is enacted into law 2. Ensure that Open defecation is eliminated by 2030 through the implementation of the Community-Led Total Sanitation roadmap 3. Promotion of One WASH Agenda that aims to achieve SDG 6.1 and 6.2 targets in the National Development Strategy through adoption of the Sanitation and Water for All Mutual Accountability Mechanism 4. Support the WASH financing and investment by allocating adequate budget to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. 5. Support the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in strengthening the systems for WASH data collection, monitoring and reporting including setting up a stakeholder water, sanitation and hygiene platform for donor coordination, alignment, harmonization of activities and potential co-financing. This is one significant milestone that has been achieved. The full success of the compact lies ahead. Now is the best time to align towards the implementation of these ambitious commitments. Currently, over 25% of Liberia’s population lacks access to safe water, and only 17% have access to improved sanitation services. But the establishment of the WASH Standing Committee within the 55th Legislature marks a crucial step towards addressing the long-standing challenges faced by the WASH sector in the country. USAID's Countywide Sanitation Activity (CWSA) and its national partner, Compassion for Humanity (C4H)-Liberia, along with the consortium led by Population Services International (PSI) and partners including Concern Worldwide, Athena Infonomics, and Gusceman, Inc. are joining forces to celebrate this remarkable achievement. Together, they are committed to eradicating open defecation and ensuring that all Liberians have access to safe water and sanitation services. This powerful collaboration brings Liberia closer to ensuring that every citizen has access to the safe water and sanitation they deserve, paving the way for a healthier future for everyone. #CWSAinLiberia #WaSH #SanitationTransformation #CommunityPartnership #AthenaInfonomics #SanitationforAll #WaterforAll #SDG6

Ghana 🇬🇭 has signed a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Compact to bolster efforts in providing equitable access to safe water, improved sanitation, and good hygiene practices. While WASH services and behaviors are crucial for national development, progress in this area has lagged behind sectors like education, health, energy, and technology. In South Sudan, access to basic hand hygiene, such as handwashing facilities with soap and water, remains a significant challenge. Approximately 6 out of 10 people in the country do not have access to basic hand hygiene facilities at home. This is a critical issue, especially in rural areas and conflict-affected regions, where access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services is often limited. Efforts to improve this situation are ongoing, with organizations like Aqua-Africa, UNICEF, and others working to install handwashing stations and expand clean water access in vulnerable communities. However, progress is slow, and significant investments are needed to ensure universal access to hand hygiene by 2030.
