How much does the arts mean to you?

Small gestures at scale make a big impact, so why not consider what you could donate to the Old Fire Station’s Big Give campaign. https://lnkd.in/eFJ5QeVH People need a place to feel welcome, express ideas and passions, think through changing times, or escape into art, dance or a show. These opportunities often don’t exist for people with fewer resources, and the combination of Covid, the cost-of-living crisis and stretched frontline services means there are many people who are not being represented or included in the arts. Through working more inclusively, over the next year the Old Fire Station in Oxford expects a footfall of 25,000 people in our building. Some will come to see a show or join a workshop, some will be moving on from homelessness or social crises, others will be volunteers, trainees or refugee women working for Damascus Rose Kitchen. Our work helps people feel part of a community and less isolated, make connections and build networks, improve wellbeing and a sense of purpose, feel heard, represented and valued.

It's #MeetTheTeamMonday! Today, we're introducing Gage Frank. "I first fell in love with The Center when I attended the Empower Her Gala in 2022. Being raised by a single mom, who a single mom raised, I was truly moved and inspired by this work. I thought to myself that if only my mom knew about The Center when she was shouldering unforeseen life circumstances like dealing with her divorce or alcoholism. Seeing and hearing stories that reminded me of my mom and her challenges, I asked if there was any way I could help this organization. I immediately found out that there was a spot open on the Board of Directors." says Gage. Fun fact about Gage, he loves to cook, he loves going on hikes with his dog, but most importantly, he says, he loves to play guitar. He's been playing guitar, bass and drums since he was 12 year old. "It was an outlet for me and has always helped me stay grounded in my work and focused on my goals. I guess my true love would be with music, as I don’t discriminate by genre—if it's good, it's good. There was a period of time in my life when I routinely had the same idea return to the forefront of my mind. I had become aware of a dramatically underserviced community because I unexpectedly joined it - that is, families with multi-disabled children who use wheelchairs. The lack of public resource in conjunction with the financial and emotional stress was alarming. I started to meet other families like my own and quickly developed a strong desire to make a difference in their lives. I started sharing this unshakeable idea with friends and family. It wasn't an easy sell - start a charity? Record and distribute music? 'Complex', 'pipe dream', 'it's too hard to obtain 501c3 licensing'... the list of reasons it couldn't be done was long. A core group of exceptional individuals bought what I was selling and we got to work, breathing life into Giving Songs. The initial hope was to assist one family. I knew if we could do that we'd be able to say we succeeded. We're working with our 30th family now and have distributed almost $350,000 worth of grants to support the conversion of vans so they're wheelchair accessible. These vans give families the freedom of transportation, reduce their isolation and allow them to rejoin their communities. What I did not expect was the personal growth and fulfillment that would accompany this project. We have been introduced to and have developed cherished friendships with families we wouldn't know if it weren't for that idea I couldn't shake, and a handful of talented folks who believed in a vision. One of those families is pictured here, and I am beyond grateful for it. Some takeaways: - That idea you can't shake? Take action. Give it a shot. - Do not let those who say it can't be done prevent you from doing it. - Do something good for others without an ROI calculation. Find an opportunity to make a difference and take it.
