The Yellow Stonefly Nymph is the 3rd fly in the series of 6 flies for the upcoming group trip to Oconee State Park in South Carolina. The next three flies will be dry flies for this trip. Stonefly nymphs are aquatic, flattened, with 6 sprawling legs and with a segmented abdomen bearing 2 long antenna-like “tails” (cerci). The antennae on the head are long, too. Gills are tuft like and usually positioned at the bases of the legs, on the underside of the body. Each foot has 2 claws. The lengths of the nymph are ½ to 1½ inches.

Short-eared owl. This was the last frame from the first of my Winter Owl workshops, which concluded yesterday. The snow was a welcome treat after many weather-related challenges (Rain & tropical weather)! The Short-eared Owl was first described in 1763 by Danish bishop and amateur naturalist Erich Ludvigsen Pontoppidan.
