Celebrating World Thinking Day 2024 - for members of Girlguiding and Girl Scouts worldwide. Not heard of this one before? It happens every 22 February and is a chance for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts across the world to think about each other, the worldwide movement they’re part of, and important issues. Clearly I can't share photos of our young members who are the main focus of our organisation but I wanted to share the highs and (not so) lows of my voluntary career with Girlguiding. From being interviewed by ITV news about an LTA She Rallies event with Judy Murray to windswept litter picking on Rye Nature Reserve in the rain; or trying to look cool (and failing) at a creepy crawlies evening with our Rainbows or remaking my promise at Brownsea Island. Many people think of volunteering with Girlguiding as being about helping with Brownie crafts every Tuesday but that's just one option. As an organisation we're experiencing change and as we look to our thriving future we'll need to recruit strong role models with the right values and leadership style to lead us forward. In my little corner of the UK, we vacancies for County treasurer, social media experts, PR Ambassadors, unit helpers, trainers or outdoor activity and adventure makers. Each one of the roles is exactly what our volunteers want to make of it from trips to the arctic or India to joining in with local parades or developing themselves as leaders. Did you know there are seven different styles of volunteering? Here's a taste of how you can get involved: 1. Microvolunteers – giving a few hours for a task like an food drive or an annual event 2. Regular volunteers – showing up for a regular shift so you can schedule it around other commitments 3. Sports volunteers – offering your expertise as a coach, trainer, tournament coordinator, etc. during a season 4. Student volunteers – fulfilling 40 hours of mandated time to graduate high school or a post-secondary student seeking future job-related experience 5. Leadership volunteers – serving on a committee or a board to make decisions to shape an organization 6. Project-related volunteers – contributing time and talent to get an event or construction project off the ground then moving onto the next challenge 7. Remote volunteers – connecting with others via phone or video without leaving your home or office Within each of these roles, you can find a great deal of variety so you never get bored. In short, it takes every kind of volunteer in Peterborough for organizations to function well, so choose one that works for you.
