WellChild Project Number 10 sponsored by Speedy. Birmingham, on 12th & 13th March 2024: The harder the effort, the greater the reward!  It rained and rained on day 1 and the ground became a mud bath which slowed us down considerably. The volunteers, all made up of senior management from Speedy, worked tirelessly and without complaint on both days to get this project finished for Lewis and his family. Lewis is 7 and has several conditions including Cerebral Palsy and Global Developmental Delay and, as you can see from the 'before' photos, the family couldn't even use their garden before Speedy transformed the lower half, giving Lewis and his sisters a safe, flat and soft area to play and have fun in! Without the financial support & volunteers from companies like Speedy then I don't think we could deliver this programme to the children and families who desperately need help! THANK YOU! Washtenaw Camp Placement began tracking our campership numbers in 1962 when we officially launched our program. That year, we granted 114 camperships to residential camps. By 1964, the number had increased to 131 campers, and we were sending them to 20 different camps. However, by 1965, our referrals had surged to 365, with a significant number of children unable to attend camp due to financial constraints. Today, we continue to place an average of 150 campers every year, totaling over 10,000 camperships since 1962. Despite our success, one of our biggest challenges remains unchanged: the need to raise additional funds to send more children to camp. A campership holds immense importance for a child. Families of these children cannot afford the tuition, transportation, or camping gear required for summer camp attendance. Without WCP, many of these children would miss out on the transformative experience of sleepaway summer camp. The loss of this opportunity goes beyond what one might expect; it denies children the chance to engage in activities such as sailing, swimming, horseback riding, or making s'mores alongside their peers who are not on scholarship. At camp, they are given experiences that their families would not otherwise be able to provide, experiences that will shape their future. They will gain independence, confidence, and self-esteem—qualities that are crucial for their development. These kids need to go to camp. It's a record! The €10m Dublin Airport Community Fund recently re-opened for applications, with more than 75+ sports clubs and groups from across the Fingal region applying for funding - the highest number yet. A process has now commenced to assess those applications, with an independent grant-making panel due to meet over the coming weeks to determine which projects are eligible for funding. Dublin Airport’s Community Fund was launched in 2017 with a total investment of €10 million to be distributed over 25 years. The Dublin Airport Community Fund makes a call for applications twice a year – normally in Spring and Autumn, with two types of grants available: Minor Grants of less than €5,000; and Major Grants of more than €5,000. The next applications window will open in Spring 2024, when applications will once again be invited from 13 eligible areas from Santry, south of the airport to Rolestown in the north, and from Tyrrelstown on the west to Portmarnock on the east. Here's a little bit of a different #SafetyTopic -- Water Safety. It's pool, lake, and beach season, and taking a swim is a great way to cool off. But water needs to be respected! This summer, take steps to make sure your loved ones -- especially kids -- are safe in and around the water. In my years with the Y, some of the key things we talked about when it comes to water safety are: 🙋♂️Make sure kids know they need to ask permission before getting in the water. Make it a habit. The child gets permission, and an adult is aware! 👀 While all adults should be paying attention, consider creating shifts with designated "Water Watchers." His or her job is to watch the summer fun like a hawk with no distractions. 📵 Put your phone down! Especially the Water Watcher. 💦 Don't just watch: Get in! Model safe behavior in and around water! 🏊♀️ And finally, the best way to keep kids safe around water is to enroll in swim lessons. The Y (YMCA) invented swim lessons, and there are Ys in communities across the country. Many (Most? All?) provide support for families to participate in programs like swim lessons, even if they are struggling financially. And if you're an adult who can't swim, The Y offers adult swim lessons as well! Will you commit to being a Water Watcher this summer? #watersafety #summertime

‘Increase access to green spaces to solve play crisis, charity urges next government’ - Children & Young People Now The Fields in Trust 2024 Green Space Index, raises concerns over the accessibility of playgrounds and recreational spaces for Britain's children, with clear implications on health, wellbeing, and physical activity levels. 🛝 2.3 million (1 in 3) under-nines live more than a ten-minute walk from their nearest playground. 🛝 Unfair access to playgrounds regionally, with children in the North East and West Midlands particularly likely to live more than ten minutes away from a playground. 🛝 Poor planning choices and historic underinvestment as driving factors which have created a ‘play crisis’. Councillors have warned that they cannot afford to maintain sites, and nearly 800 playgrounds have closed since 2013. Children are having their right to a place to play taken away. More must be done to address the play crisis. The Residential Outdoor Education (Wales) Bill, proposing a funded entitlement for children in Wales, is continuing its journey through the Senedd, and the debate in the Senedd itself will happen In April. Prior to that, the committees responsible for scrutinising the proposals will be reporting their recommendations soon, and, whatever the outcome, the Bill has raised the profile of outdoor education/learning significantly. From little things…what started as an idea, a dream, is now a reality. Anyone who lives in country towns knows if you want something done, you get in, volunteer, get a team on board and work hard to make it happen. The old tennis courts in Binnaway had seen better days, not used much, weeds growing through the cracks you know the deal…I asked around, got a couple of people keen, slowly we built to having regular social tennis. There were holes in the old nets, the balls would hit the cracks in the surface but it brought people together and gave them much needed social connection and exercise in the middle of the drought. Slowly, we built a committee, applied for grants, improved the lighting, painted the amenities and cleaned, mowed, got new nets and whipper snipped. We held BBQs, fundraised or funded ourselves to keep it going and now have regular free kids coaching clinics in the school holidays. We dreamt of resurfacing: made a plan, got quotes, lobbied, held meetings, consulted, added a multipurpose court, persisted through the many challenges and finally…it happened! Lessons: 1. Do it yourself: you can sit around, whinge and wait or make a plan and make it happen 2. Volunteers are key to rural community resilience: the more we and particularly government at all levels can support volunteer community groups and their efforts the better. 3. It takes a team: everything is better when you can share it. Others will bring fresh ideas, perspectives and skills and of course it is crucial for that joint sense of ownership and achievement.
