My new vision column
Empowering women.
Uganda, being an African country, has a traditional view of women. This is especially so in rural areas where men expect women to be submissive and find their place in bearing children, tending the shamba and preparing food. I employ many women on my farm to pick coffee, harvest maize or do ring weeding. Women play a large role in development because they put what they earn back into the household to develop the family, while men often spend their wages on frivolous activities such as drinking and womanising.
Although I employ many men on the farm (since much of the work requires muscle power) the best supervisors are women. The nursery is supervised by a woman, the pest control section, the coffee picking and slashing and the Coffee Lodge are all supervised by women. It is now common to find women in senior positions in the corporate sector, but there are also many good women in the village who are being overlooked. Often, the only thing that is holding women back is men, because the men want to keep women subservient, and they become insecure when their women are not dependent on them.
I have also observed that some women change when they get into positions of power. I have seen this particularly in politics in Uganda. It may be because these women feel they need to be tougher than the men who surround them. I see it in the way that women drive aggressively in Kampala, perhaps because they feel they will be bullied by male drivers, so they have become bullies themselves.
But women do not need to transform into aggressive pseudo-males to compete. A woman is unique in her own right, and not just in terms of sex and beauty, but because she has different hormones, so she has different emotions and thinks differently. How many women have started wars? Because women are not driven by testosterone they are not as aggressive as men. Each sex has different qualities, and if women are authentic, they can be more persuasive, more empathetic, more consistent, and more dependable than men. If you add to this the responsibility they take for family and children, women are the backbone of society. When I watch Kamala Harris, I see a woman with poise and charm, who will not allow herself to be drawn into Donald Trump’s macho world.
Men and women can be equally brilliant in terms of their intellect. Codie Sanchez is a thirty-seven-year-old Latina woman who gives brilliant lectures on business. She is very articulate, her insights are amazing, and I love listening to her on YouTube. On the other hand, Warren Buffet is a ninety-four-year-old white male who is also brilliant, and I love listening to his wisdom. Stereotyping, typecasting, and presuming that women only have certain talents is wrong. They have female characteristics, but on top of that they have various talents, just as men do... see more https://lnkd.in/dDAhnwcC
