Can you recite your organisation mission, vision, values, purposes, and strategy as easily as you can your favourite song? This is a great read by Suzanne Lucas especially for those interested in strategy documents and value statements. It's fascinating to consider the length of mission, vision, and value statements and how well we can remember and embody them. Strategy documents can sometimes be too long, making them hard to remember and live by. There needs to be a balance between brevity and memorability—something we can recite and live, like song lyrics. While we can remember long texts if they resonate with us, few people can recall hundreds of pages like skilled actors can with Shakespeare. We all play roles in our work and personal lives, similar to actors, and this involves rehearsing lines and living out values. With Words, Practice (and Iteration) Makes Perfect When I write for business or passion, I’m always looking for the right words to communicate my meaning. Some of you know, I’ve also done a bit of stand-up. Scary and tremendously fun, I use some of the learnings in my life. When I teach or coach about business development, I often talk about researching, listening well, but also about choosing the right words for your specific audience. You can elevate your communications by being aware of the response and iterating - similarly to how a professional comedian workshops their jokes.
