This past Saturday I attended the Future of Beauty Summit at Columbia Business School. I got to hear from some amazing speakers such as Jane Lauder from The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and Jackie Dunklau from Aria Growth while also catching up with some former colleagues/friends such as Andrew Ross from XRC Ventures and Serena Advani from Seadrop Skincare. Here are my key takeaways from the summit: 💡 Potential in the Beauty Industry: Despite the decline in overall funding, the beauty industry has shown resilience and outperformed other consumer categories in 2023. The industry presents significant opportunities for investors, especially those who understand the space well and can capitalize on strategic M&A. 💡 Importance of AI: AI is considered one of the most transformational technologies of our time, with companies possessing proprietary data and knowing how to leverage it expected to succeed. 💡 Investor Criteria: Investors prioritize founders with vision, traction, and clear differentiation. They emphasize the importance of high-touch experiences and the emotional connection consumers have with beauty brands. 💡 Challenges and Risks: Early-stage beauty startups face challenges such as the "valley of death". Investors focus on scalability, market positioning, and sustainable growth. 💡 Convergence with Wellness: There is a growing convergence between beauty and wellness categories. 💡 Focus on Innovation: Investors seek brands that address unmet needs and demonstrate innovation. They stress the importance of the "x factor" or human factor, embodied by the founder's passion and authenticity. 💡 Scaling Strategies: Scaling strategies involve maintaining a core identity while expanding market reach. We had a great time at the 2024 Nashville Innovation Summit, where our Director of Analytics, Evan Elmore, took the stage to share his expertise on the panel Risks and Rewards: Innovation in the Enterprise alongside Kate O'Neil and Aaron Montlary. Evan spoke about the common pitfalls companies face when crafting their innovation strategies and highlighted best practices he’s observed from his experience. He also dove into what success looks like for innovation initiatives and how to navigate the barriers of size and bureaucracy within corporate organizations. Our key takeaways from the event include– 1.  Innovation is about more than technology. Too often, organizations start with a solution and try to find a problem it solves instead of starting with a well-defined problem and then defining barriers and potential solutions. 2.  “Innovation is distinct from creativity” – Aaron. You need creativity to come up with new ideas, but you need a process to ensure ideas become solutions. 3.  To succeed, you must have executive buy-in and a clear ROI. Saving time or making work less tedious is important, but they must be tied into clear ways that automation or extra time will improve financial performance. 4.  Have a strong point of view and stick to it. Potential customers and investors can sense if you change your product or offering in the middle of a pitch and will back away from a deal.
