Electrified mining: infrastructure and charging challenges The plan for mining companies to ‘go electric’ is not a simple one, with those industry front runners having already confronted various challenges on their way to making this shift. BHP, as the world’s biggest mining company with an operating footprint in most major mining hubs, is aware of these hurdles and is working within the organisation and with external parties to confront these. We’re excited to confirm that attendees of The Electric Mine 2024, in Perth, Western Australia, will get to hear all about this in just under two months’ time! Ryan Preece, Lead Mines Electrification, Operational Decarbonisation, BHP, will be taking to the stage at the Crown Perth on May 22, presenting 'Electrified mining: infrastructure and charging challenges' to those in our Surface Mining stream. In this 25-minute session, Ryan will highlight specific areas of development the company is focused on to overcome these challenges. This includes a look at some of the typical substation and hardware philosophies being used to electrify mining operations – and how these can potentially be standardised – as well as the logistics associated with getting reliable power to the location. Ryan will also delve into the world of stationary charging, and where robotic chargers and X-MCS Plug ruggedisation could further facilitate charging of surface mining equipment in harsh open-pit environments. We can’t wait to hear more! To see who else will be joining Ryan at The Electric Mine 2024 (May 21-23), head to www.theelectricmine.com now #mineelectrification #TheElectricMine #BEVs #electricmine24

Being an advocate for change. All thanks to Gosia P. I have celebrated the trending desire to reduce carbon footprint generated from our mines globally. The capacity of the mines (tonnes produced per hour) has a significant correlation with the emissions in our conventional mines system. I had used Lego Serious play to critically think. Diverging to gather information and then converging into one most logically, innovative outcome. Electric mines will reduce carbon footprint in mines but the questions from my critical thinking are: 1. How will the electricity be generated will it be the same carbon emission process? 2. Will there be energy looses along the process, from generation units till it gets to the mines for use? 3. How sustainable is the process? If we have a clean process in mining operations but generate more emissions at the electricity generation aspect of the supply chain. We have not solved the problem but shifted the blame from mines to others. We have also added to the amount of energy produced for handling a tonne from our mines as systems always have losses or leakages as the case may be. My conclusion in my divergent process is to have a system that is driven from generated clean energy sources. I am not talking of wind it’s not sufficient and not sustainable. I am talking of hydrogen fusion. We will not get it right in our fight to address global carbon emissions if we don’t invest at solve the root cause. Thanks to teams in the UK, Europe, USA working in this light. We can do more. I think the move for electrically driven mines operation is the way forward and I is a step to take but true global success will come when we fuse this move in our mines with clean electricity generation. I hope we get our global breakthrough in hydrogen fusion. Kudos to International mining.

After months of proof-of-concept development, we are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the Mining Technology Innovation Challenge, powered by Rogers 5G. NORCAT, along with partners Rogers Communications, Dell Technologies, OVIN, and MICA | Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator, have unleashed the potential of 5G underground, accelerating its application in mine safety with SafeSight Exploration Inc. Inc.’s winning technology. A live demonstration of SafeSight’s DeepTraxx-5G and SafeScanner-5G was live-streamed from the NORCAT Underground Centre, simulating a potential thermal runaway scenario involving a damaged BEV where employees were trapped underground. Given the extreme risk, the current protocol involves containment until the fire burns out before sending additional support. However, SafeSight’s 5G-enabled technology can be deployed from the surface, providing crucial scene assessment thermal video and 3D mapping to responders before they venture underground. The result? Safer and more effective assessment and search and rescue operations. The integration of 5G technology into the mining sector holds immense promise, offering high-speed connectivity and low-latency capabilities that significantly enhance safety, communication, productivity, and operational efficiency in underground mines across the globe. 📍Mining Insight: 3 Factors that Matter When Developing a Mineral Project Often projects are promoted and compared on grade and interceptions. I've notice this more and more in the industry. Though this is important information it seems far to often be the main criteria accessing opportunity for investors. Mining and exploration sucess is often much more nuanced in which success of a project is dependent on a range of factors and advantages that often are over looked or not fully appreciated. Here are three additional considerations that are important to keep in mind with any project evaluation. #ProjectValuation #Mining #Roundup #VRIC #Exploration
⚒️ Title: 3 Considerations Beyond Grade When Finding Opportunity in Mining 1. Understanding #Deposit Type: In mining investment decisions, understanding the deposit type is fundamental. Different deposit types, such as skarns and porphyries, present unique challenges and opportunities that significantly influence project feasibility and economic viability. For example, scarns like Antamina, are truly impressive deposits including in size, however this is atypical. Skarn deposits are more complex systems and more often than not can encounter challenges in the exploration and development stages related to continuity and grade, and often can shrink in size during the resource drilling. Porphyry deposits, on the other hand, often reveal more ore potential as exploration progresses. Understanding these nuances is crucial, primarily since investment communities rarely discuss such complexities. 2. #Infrastructure's Impact on Project Viability: The role of infrastructure in mining investments is critical and full value often os underappreciated. The presence and quality of infrastructure, including roads, power, and industrial transportation corridors such as ports or intermodal transportation (rail), often determine whether mines can weather economic cycles and keep construction costs on budget. Quality infrastructure investments enhance productivity and ensure project sustainability. Moreover, cost overruns in mining projects are frequently linked to challenges related to infrastructure, particularly in areas with rugged elevations and logistics, highlighting the importance of robust infrastructure planning. 3. #Elevation: The High-Altitude (3500 m +) Challenge: Elevation is a crucial factor in mining operations. Mines at high altitudes, such as those in the Andes, encounter unique challenges, including health risks like altitude sickness, equipment functionality issues in thin air, and logistical complexities. These factors can significantly impact workforce efficiency, safety, and operational costs. Mining companies need to adapt their strategies to manage these challenges effectively. 4. The McClintock Group Approach: Mining with Foresight: The McClintock Group considers these aspects vital in uncovering opportunities in the mining sector. We focus on unlocking value by understanding geological nuances, the pivotal role of infrastructure, and the unique challenges of different mining environments. This approach helps identify and capitalize on sustainable and profitable mining opportunities. We invite stakeholders to learn more about how we represent and assist investors and provide technical advice and strategic oversight to ensure quality projects advance with capital efficiency in mind. #MiningInvestment #McClintockGroup #MiningInsights #Evaluations #AddingValue #Execution #ResourceOpportunities #CriticalMinerals #VRIC #AMECRoundup2024 #TSXV

Boliden was the first mining company globally to establish electric trolley technology in the Arctic climate setting a global benchmark while reducing diesel consumption. Today, the electric trolley has been expanded to the Aitik and Kevitsa copper open pit mines. Comprehensive electrification initiatives are underway in our underground mines as well in the inland of Västerbotten where fossil-free technology for underground mining is being developed and the goal is virtually fossil-free operations by 2025. On April 22, we surpassed our most recent new technology milestone in the Kristineberg mine by successfully deploying the first fully battery-electric trolley truck system on an 800-meter-long underground mine test track together with Epiroc and ABB. These are just some of the innovation keys to our vision of being the world’s most respected and climate-friendly metal supplier. https://lnkd.in/gmxaef8x #Innovation #SustainableMetals #ClimateTransition #IndustryBenchmark #Responsibility
