Vegetarians and vegans – almost the same or different?   Both vegetarians and vegans are very similar in their motivation to avoid meat – both groups are most strongly motivated by animal rights.   But vegans are more motivated health, environmental, and especially animal rights for dairy/egg reduction compared to vegetarians. The Alternative's proposal for the pigs has finally been released. It has been a long time coming. The result has turned out really well, thanks to the strong animal rights voices active in The Alternative and our animal rights spokesperson Helene Liliendahl Brydensholt. Many will read it and think "this is utopian and totally unrealistic," as is often the case with The Alternative's grand ideas. But every word in the proposal is founded in reason and in possibilities. Primarily the possibility to give the animals a life they can bear to live. Which for me is the most important goal of such a proposal. Next, there are opportunities for agriculture to evolve into an industry that can be proud of itself again. These are harsh words perhaps... but do you know what's worse and much, much harder? The life of a pig in Danish agriculture. If we can come to the realization that we must take responsibility for OUR production in this country, stop tormenting animals for export, and work towards an innovative agriculture, then we can, for starters, cut down on 86% of pig production. That's an enormous number of pigs that will be spared from being abused, mutilated, terrorized, and carried away in trucks to grim slaughterhouses. A few will say "that's not good enough, NO pigs should be caught in agriculture and end up as chopped parts in a fridge section." And those who know me know that this is also my stance. But... the proposal actually provides the opportunity for us to take responsibility for OUR production, consumption, and choices. If we initially "only produce" animals for our own citizens and nothing for export - AND at the same time continue to work on making green ethical food available, then the production will further transition. The prospect of a vanishingly small animal production is there, with this proposal. It is responsible, visionary, possible, and decent. I am looking forward to contributing to making this proposal a reality... and to taking the next step for animal rights. The AMIC team is proud to announce Abby Kornegay from the US-based not-for-profit Animal Agriculture Alliance (AAA) to front a workshop focused on Dealing with Detractors as a precursor to the MPEC conference. The AAA was established in the US to safeguard the future of the animal agriculture community and counterbalance misinformation pushed by the likes of extreme animal rights groups.According to AMIC’s Tim Ryan, the Detractors' workshop content has relevance beyond dealing with activism. "While the industry is proud to demonstrate our best-practice credentials, we are under increasing pressure, and in some instances outright attack, from those who wish to damage our reputation and standing within the Australian community. This workshop will equip delegates with practical information and tools for preparing and dealing with such detractors. "I'm really excited that AMIC is partnering with AAA for this workshop. While the US and Australian production, processing and regulatory systems differ in many areas, we’re ultimately faced with the same underlying challenge: how do we effectively communicate our credentials and practices to consumers and the community?” said Mr Ryan. Founded in 1987, the Animal Agriculture Alliance brings together all components of the food supply chain from farmers to processors and allied companies to connect, engage and protect animal agriculture. Workshop leader Abby Kornegay is responsible for shaping the Alliance’s issues management and crisis communications strategy and will draw on her experience with managing misinformation to share a series of tools, protection and response strategies for those at the coal face of dealing with detractors. Dealing with Detractors is one of three pre-conference options offered on October 31 – ahead of the conference trade show and welcome function kicking off at 5pm that evening. Delegates attending MPEC 23 can choose between Agri Labour Australia’s Ambrose golf tournament, a tour of the Port of Brisbane and the AAA’s Detractors workshop. The Dealing with Detractors Workshop will commence at 1pm on Tuesday, October 31. Participation is only available to those attending the MPEC conference the next day.
