We all know pride season separates the professionals from the amateurs in marketing— only few are appropriately championing brand purpose in alignment with Pride. And who are these brand purpose champions you may ask? Our Pride & Purpose shortlist is 🥁 Skittles - When it comes to Pride, Skittles has mastered the rainbow. Absolut Vodka (The Absolut Group) - For more than 40 years, Absolut has been an ally brand to the LGBTQ+ community. From being the first sponsor on Rupaul’s Drag Race to collaborating with iconic queer artists like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol in the 80’s, Absolut has been leading with Pride long before others. LEGO (the LEGO Group) - Compared to the other brands in this list, LEGO does not have a longstanding history of being a Pride champion but they do deserve credit for their Everyone is Awesome LEGO set. MAC Cosmetics - Since being founded in the 80s, another veteran ally is MAC Cosmetics. MAC slays Pride month marketing by way of their iconic 'Viva Glam' campaign, the lipstick that saves lives! Reacting to 2023’s backlashes and boycotts, some brands have avoided Pride 2024 despite a clear commercial and moral imperative: globally, LGBTQ+ spending power rose by 20.5% between 2019 and 2023. But others are winning fans by digging in, surfacing hidden histories, creating sanctuaries, centring family (biological and chosen) and taking an educative role. I often get asked why I would start a brand (Gay Water) that is polarizing based on just our name. Here's a few things I have to say: 👉🏼 If you're "a brand for everyone", you're really a brand for no one. "A brand for everyone" roughly translates to "I don't actually know my audience and/or my brand has no personality". 👉🏼 If you're in a cluttered space, like the beverage space, you need to be able to differentiate yourself. A name like Gay Water, whether good or bad, inspires conversation and discourse. Don't just be a part of the conversation, create it. 👉🏼 If consumers are offended by a word, one that, by the way, also just means happy, they were never going to buy your product to begin with. And, they can't boycott a brand they have never actually purchased. And lastly, despite that you may see on Fox News: 👉🏼 Americans are 2x more likely to buy or use a brand if the brand publicly supports and demonstrates a commitment to expanding and protecting LGBTQ+ rights according to a recent ANA Report (https://lnkd.in/e5Gsyxr2) Follow Gay Water and join our mission to create representation in spaces like liquor stores, grocery stores, bars, restaurants, concert venues and beyond.

This June, I reread an article I wrote last year. Unfortunately, we’ve seen MORE legislative harm and attacks on the LGBTQ+ community over the passing year. It reminded me that the structures we create (in any environment) produce behaviors that serve that structure. As business leaders, we must be very intentional about the structures we create. Are we promoting inclusivity and acceptance? Or are we creating an environment that allows for or excuses exclusivity? The private sector can be a powerful channel to demonstrate what we stand for and demand when legislation fails us. 🏳️🌈 https://lnkd.in/eCTpyYvz
