Charter schools seem like the education world’s bad boy with a report card full of potential. Three decades in, the shine is wearing off, with critics firing accusations of profiteering and segregation. #CharterSchools Remember the original dream? Community-run schools breaking the mold, igniting innovation, and giving kids a fighting chance? The brightest stars like @chartercollab in the charter universe are still shining. They’re the ones with the multiple accountability measures, the ones empowering communities, the ones obsessed with transforming lives, not lining pockets. Dynamic public education needs renegades AND reformers. The renegades push boundaries, the reformers hold them accountable. So, let’s ditch the misinformation and have a real conversation. Can charters be the future of education? Absolutely, but only if they get back to their roots. Thoughts?🤔 #TheFutureIsNow #PublicEducation #DynamicDuo #AccountabilityWins #EmpoweringEducation #CommunityControl #EducationRevolution #charterschoolsweek #blackeducators https://lnkd.in/eTDVFQ3U

#publiceducation #uspolitics #election2024 Teach Your Children Well Why Tim Walz is the perfect antidote to Project 2025 Dan Rather and Team Steady "If you are a seasoned reader of Steady, you know how I feel about public education. I believe it is a civil right and a great equalizer. I also feel strongly that teachers are some of the most important public servants in our society. Preserving a robust public school system is vital to the well-being of our citizens and the health of our democracy. To see two products of public education as the Democratic nominees for president and vice president of the United States does my heart good. Vice President Kamala Harris attended public schools in Oakland, California, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz not only attended public schools through graduate school but also taught in Minnesota public schools for decades. Theirs is the ultimate American dream — and validation that our education system can work. It is a system that is far from perfect, but please understand there’s a plan being promoted by the MAGA right that will gut it dramatically, minimizing the federal government’s role in education."

🔑 Key takeaway - Charter schools can be innovative catalysts within the public education system. 🎓 Decades ago, these schools were an unsung concept. But now? Charter schools are thriving in Mississippi, influencing education on a broader scale. 💡 Mississippi - a state brimming with over 10 operating charter schools. These institutions are government-funded, yet hold unique autonomy that sets them apart from traditional public schools. 🎯 Ensured by the aptly named Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board, these schools undertake a mission - to revolutionize education while serving diverse student populations. Just because they're unconventional, doesn't mean they're unaccountable. They're continually monitored, held responsible for their performance metrics. 📊 But how have they fared? Here's a comforting nugget. These schools have been lauded for improving student outcomes, particularly among traditionally underserved students. 💼 While the decades shape and reshape education narratives, one thing remains constant - Charter schools in Mississippi stand tall, extending myriad choices, fostering an environment ripe for educational success. 🏆 So, let's discuss - Are charter schools redefining how we approach education? Looking forward to your thoughts! 📚 Charter schools TalentServe #CharterSchools #PublicEducation #Innovation #Mississippi #EducationReform #StudentOutcomes #Accountability #EducationChoice #EducationSuccess #CharterSchoolImpact #EducationRevolution #ReachifyMe

Did you know that the charter school movement has been gaining momentum since the late 1980s, and it's only getting stronger? According to UsNews and World Report, charter schools operated in 35 states back in 2000-2001. Fast forward to today, and that number has risen to 45 states, with West Virginia adopting a charter school law in 2019! 🌎 Enrollment in charter schools has been on the rise, too! 📈 In the 2021-2022 school year, nearly 3.7 million students were enrolled in charter schools nationwide, making up about 7% of all public school students. This is a significant increase from the approximately 2 million students enrolled in charters back in 2011-2012, representing about 4% of public school students. 📚✨ Robin Lake, director of the Center on Reinventing Public Education, points out that investments made in high-quality charter school models in the early 2000s, along with increased demand for more accessible educational opportunities, have fueled this explosive growth. 💥 At RePublic Charter School, we're proud to be a part of this movement, providing innovative and high-quality education to our students and communities. 🏫 Let's keep growing and empowering the next generation of leaders together! 💪 #CharterSchoolSuccess #EducationMatters #RePublicStrong

How we'll get to integration and education equity: We've worked with fellow education justice advocates to craft a thoughtful strategy for ushering in an era where every student has a fair and equal shot at quality education. Our approach combines state policy changes, comprehensive research, and proactive advocacy. Why does this matter? History shows us that these tools are incredibly effective. For instance, 12 years of court-ordered desegregation dramatically narrowed the Black/white education gap - until the late 80s when rapid desegregation followed the court's loosened oversight. Transforming our schools into reflections of the diversity of our country is necessary for a healthy democracy. We are fighting for schools that are not only diverse but also rich in resources and opportunities, where every student can thrive. Dive into our roadmap linked below, and stay tuned for our detailed research and state policy agendas soon! https://lnkd.in/g9vt3EQz

Philadelphia City Council’s recent attention to charter schools — whether they have been treated unfairly, and why a majority of closures over the past decade have been of Black-operated charters — has thrust the matter into the spotlight. Councilmember and education committee chair Isaiah Thomas spoke plainly at a contentious hearing on Mayor Cherelle L. Parker’s school board nominees — a matter that is not yet settled — earlier this month: “Why don’t we treat Black charter schools the same way we treat white charter schools?” (Black-led charters represent about a quarter of the city’s sector, but a majority of its closures.) “How do you look at that number and say that’s not racist?” (Of the 17 schools that closed between 2013 and 2023, 9 or 53%, were Black-led.) An independent investigation in 2021 examined allegations of racism raised by a coalition of Black-led charters. Its report, released in October, found problems with transparency and training, but no “intentional acts of racial discrimination or bias” by the board or district charter schools office. https://lnkd.in/ebyGQFBc
Philly has closed 17 charter schools in 11 years. Here’s why.

For over a decade, Children Now and other equity groups fought for accountability and transparency in the funding California provides to schools, to ensure it goes to the students who need it most. Unfortunately, the State's regulation plans have instead led to frustrated school leaders, excessive paperwork, and communities feeling left out. Please read our latest blog on how over-reporting has hurt equity in California's education system: https://bit.ly/4a71kIS

Yes, the politics around public charter schools have become more challenging, especially in the blue-hued cities where most of the media lives and works. But across vast expanses of urban and semi-urban America, and especially in Black and brown communities where charter schools have proven most popular and effective, there’s still plenty of room to grow, and few policy barriers standing in the way.
New analysis finds charter school sector still has plenty of room to grow

Today, the Biden Administration is calling on states, cities and towns, and schools to cultivate a “culture of attendance” and send a clear message that students need to be in school. 🏫 At this morning's Every Day Counts Summit at the White House, the Director of the Domestic Policy Council of the United States, Neera Tanden, referenced the new Digital Backpack 🎒 created by the National Partnership for Student Success Hub; a set of “Resources to Address Chronic Absenteeism in Your Community,” that includes a curated set of publicly available resources, including a selection of Examples In Action (spotlights with information on how districts have worked to address chronic absence in their communities). One of these spotlights is the successful relationship between our AmeriCorps Promise Fellows and Minneapolis Public Schools (utilizing the Check & Connect: A Comprehensive Student Engagement Intervention model!) Check it out (pun intended 🤣)! ServeMinnesota Office of Governor Tim Walz & Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan https://lnkd.in/e4W_pha4
