Did you know that the charter school movement has been gaining momentum since the late 1980s, and it's only getting stronger? According to UsNews and World Report, charter schools operated in 35 states back in 2000-2001. Fast forward to today, and that number has risen to 45 states, with West Virginia adopting a charter school law in 2019! 🌎 Enrollment in charter schools has been on the rise, too! 📈 In the 2021-2022 school year, nearly 3.7 million students were enrolled in charter schools nationwide, making up about 7% of all public school students. This is a significant increase from the approximately 2 million students enrolled in charters back in 2011-2012, representing about 4% of public school students. 📚✨ Robin Lake, director of the Center on Reinventing Public Education, points out that investments made in high-quality charter school models in the early 2000s, along with increased demand for more accessible educational opportunities, have fueled this explosive growth. 💥 At RePublic Charter School, we're proud to be a part of this movement, providing innovative and high-quality education to our students and communities. 🏫 Let's keep growing and empowering the next generation of leaders together! 💪 #CharterSchoolSuccess #EducationMatters #RePublicStrong

🔑 Key takeaway - Charter schools can be innovative catalysts within the public education system. 🎓 Decades ago, these schools were an unsung concept. But now? Charter schools are thriving in Mississippi, influencing education on a broader scale. 💡 Mississippi - a state brimming with over 10 operating charter schools. These institutions are government-funded, yet hold unique autonomy that sets them apart from traditional public schools. 🎯 Ensured by the aptly named Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board, these schools undertake a mission - to revolutionize education while serving diverse student populations. Just because they're unconventional, doesn't mean they're unaccountable. They're continually monitored, held responsible for their performance metrics. 📊 But how have they fared? Here's a comforting nugget. These schools have been lauded for improving student outcomes, particularly among traditionally underserved students. 💼 While the decades shape and reshape education narratives, one thing remains constant - Charter schools in Mississippi stand tall, extending myriad choices, fostering an environment ripe for educational success. 🏆 So, let's discuss - Are charter schools redefining how we approach education? Charter schools seem like the education world’s bad boy with a report card full of potential. Three decades in, the shine is wearing off, with critics firing accusations of profiteering and segregation. #CharterSchools Remember the original dream? Community-run schools breaking the mold, igniting innovation, and giving kids a fighting chance? The brightest stars like @chartercollab in the charter universe are still shining. They’re the ones with the multiple accountability measures, the ones empowering communities, the ones obsessed with transforming lives, not lining pockets. Dynamic public education needs renegades AND reformers. The renegades push boundaries, the reformers hold them accountable. So, let’s ditch the misinformation and have a real conversation. Can charters be the future of education? Absolutely, but only if they get back to their roots. Thoughts?🤔 #TheFutureIsNow #PublicEducation #DynamicDuo #AccountabilityWins #EmpoweringEducation #CommunityControl #EducationRevolution #charterschoolsweek #blackeducators https://lnkd.in/eTDVFQ3U

Happy New Year and I hope all is well with you all!! 💡 💡 Since my last post, I have been hard at work creating, editing and building legislation that we are so excited to announce is done. THE "SUPPORTING JUSTICE-ENGAGED STUDENTS IN EDUCATION ACT" will be entered in the Colorado 74th General Legislative Session. A handful of quick pre-cursors on the bill: The bill is designed largely to clear up the confusion taking place between the justice and education systems where students and families are confused about what is happening and getting lost in the soup on the way to educational attainment. It also supports school personnel in having needed guidance. Therefore, there are very new provisions, just clarification and guidance. The burden largely falls on CDE and DYS to work together ahead of Fall 2025 to provide guidance on several topics where there isn’t any currently to reduce liability for schools/districts state-wide in serving the 22,000 justice engaged students in CO. So, rather than districts needing to call their attorney and pay to have them try to figure out situations, the guidance for serving justice-engaged youth such as how to interpret credits from facilities, have them safely participate in school activities, etc. will be much clearer. Additionally, there will be a hotline available (similar to I Matter and Safe 2 Tell) that can provide guidance to school and district personnel, families and students related to what the best school options might be for them (most often not a traditional environment) and how to get needed wrap-around services. One person at each school or BOCES will also be trained in this new guidance to reduce liability. Our hope is that this will significantly reduce the burden on rural districts/schools as many of them have a student here or there and then have to figure out what to do without much support. Of course, this will also be helpful for metro schools who have large numbers and don’t have clarity on how best to serve these students and families either, what schools they would be best served by, etc.. Many Thanks to my fellow Co-Author Wendy Loloff Cooper, Christopher Hooyman, the JESCO Team and all the stakeholders across the country. https://lnkd.in/g64ejeff

🚨 Let's Set the Record Straight: Charter Schools Are Not Private Schools! 🚨 Recently, I came across an article discussing a well-known charter school organization, and I was taken aback by the misconceptions circulating in the comments section. It's disheartening to see that in 2024, there's still confusion about what charter schools really are. Charter schools are public schools, funded by taxpayers, and open to all students, regardless of background or ability. They operate independently, allowing for innovative approaches to education tailored to the needs of their communities. To dispel myths and promote understanding, it's crucial for school leaders, authorizers, alliances, coalitions, associations, vendors, and everyone in the education community to do their part. Share the facts about charter schools and help educate others about their vital role in our education system. Check out this insightful article from the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) to bust three common charter school myths: https://lnkd.in/ekTpGTNU Together, let's ensure that accurate information prevails and that charter schools continue to thrive as a valuable component of our public education landscape. 💡📚 #CharterSchools #Education #FactsMatter #charteradvocate #facts

I have more questions than answers from this article: What defines success here? Apparently, anyone can be a private school: "A private school is defined in Section 1002.01(2), Florida Statutes, as “an individual, association, co-partnership, or corporation or department, division, or section of such organizations, that designates itself as an educational center that includes kindergarten or a higher grade” and is below the college level." Interesting. delineation of requirements of private schools vs. homeschool: https://lnkd.in/gk9XhvDz I wonder why they felt the need to include this regulation: "Private schools may not exist at either end of a runway of a publicly owned, public-use airport. s. 333.03(3), F.S." In general, private schools, as defined by Florida, and homeschools have access to all public school services but if you decimate public schools and their subsequent funding, won't those services necessarily go away? Lots of questions, especially as the article notes other states are looking at Florida as a roadmap. What's your question here?

My latest Education Next on universal choice, how the public schools keep the rich in their political coalition, and what it will take to protect and grow choice programs for all families.
