"What changes count in your event strategy?" This was the key question at Memcom last week during our session "Sustainable events - what needs to change in your strategy?" moderated by our very own Community Director, Ellie Ashton-Melia 🌟 Ellie was joined by an impressive panel: Gemma Savage of ICC Wales, Marchella Mitchell from Wonderly – Strategy | Content | Tech, Haymarket Media Group, and Jessica Letters from The Royal College of Psychiatrists. The panel delved into the essentials of a sustainable events strategy, emphasising the need for actionable data in making environmental decisions. Key takeaways: 👉 Carbon data and decision making: Understanding the carbon footprint of event logistics, such as venue energy use, travel, and F&B choices, is crucial for identifying impactful changes. 👉 Practical steps for improvement: The panel explored how starting with manageable and specific sustainability goals can lead to significant environmental benefits over time. 👉 Balancing stakeholder needs: A sustainable event strategy must consider the needs of members, sponsors, and the planet, striving for solutions that effectively address all fronts. The session offered insight for event professionals looking to integrate sustainability into their event planning processes. By measuring various impacts, from energy consumption to waste production, professionals can make informed decisions. #memcom #eventprofs #eventplanning #eventsustainability

Apparently conflicting opinions on event sustainability this week, from across the globe. The Business of Events 2024 annual planner sentiment survey shows a decline in the focus of corporates on ESG in events. ICE HUB annual survey shows sustainability down the order in priority. BUT Event Industry News weekly update shows not 1, not 2 but SIX announcements in sustainability from event organisations this week. Conference & Incentive Travel (C&IT) corporate survey shows no let up in requirement for sustainable delivery. Could it be that a current squeeze on event budgets (is this also easing with the news from IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) Bellwether Report revealing that UK marketing budgets have hit a decade high in Q2-2024?) focuses event planners on current financial pressures, whilst event supply is delivering more sustainably hence requiring less focus? #eventsustainability #proofpoints eventdecision ®

To accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices in the events industry, IFES International Federation of Exhibition and Event Services VP and Holtmann+ CEO Jorg Zeissig advocates for the creation of a central material library. “We have to develop a master database that consists of decent data collected from various partners in our industry,” he explains. Currently, there’s a wealth of information about sustainability, but much of it is fragmented or only partially relevant. By bridging these gaps, we can ensure that sustainability is not just an add-on but an integral part of event planning and execution. Jorg notes that many existing solutions are either superficial or too complex to implement effectively. “A central database provides a baseline that everyone can build on, helping to overcome hesitation and promote sustainable practices across the board.” Read more: https://zurl.co/Zykh #SustainableEvents #MaterialLibrary #GreenEvents #EventIndustry #FutureOfEventing #Sustainability

𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠. We started HighVibes in a different environment. Sustainable event management was an uncharted territory. We explored it, filled in the gaps and built new solutions. We're proud of what we have achieved so far. Organising more than 160 events following our ever-developing, one-of-a-kind event organisation method has made us the number one choice for any decision-makers who take sustainability seriously. But the end goal is still far. When we changed track with Highvibes in 2019 and redesigned the event organisation model, we imagined a world without event waste. Even though green solutions are now more widely accepted in the boardroom, our world keeps heating, and the event industry keeps rolling out events that harm our planet. We have solutions, and we want to share it with you. Many of you reading this post already know that you can come to us not only with your exciting event ideas but also for advice on sustainable event management. We want to offer that to everyone. We want to use our expertise to help the industry dig deeper and learn how to make green events possible. Our new identity will be a testament to that effort. CEO of a not for profit creating a sustainable events industry, Chair of ISO 20121, Honorary doctorate from Leeds Beckett, Member of UN expert advisory committees. Changemaker, Storyteller and Global Entrepreneur
In a recent conversation someone said to me: ‘ We would like to be involved but our focus is on being the best and winning business not on helping everyone else’ This is not the first time I have heard this over the last, almost, 20 years of leading a not for profit that exists to create a sustainable event sector and it leads me to question if the idea of prioritising being the best rather than making a difference for everyone is becoming an outdated business model? I share more in my blog but would be interested to hear who in my network has experienced this (hopefully becoming outdated) business model and how did you address it? Are you exploring the business opportunity of 'being the best because you are helping the rest'? #sustainability #business #businessadvantages #purpose #purposedrivenbusiness #futureofbusiness #eventscreatechange https://lnkd.in/dBW8tGf7
