Today is National Intern Day! Did you know that for students, the primary purpose of internships is to gain skills and pursue an area of passion? Most (71 percent) are not hoping to be recruited by their host employer, and 96 percent feel that other outcomes are more important (source is the article linked below). However, forthcoming research from the Business-Higher Education Forum shows that employer motivations are much different—we’ll share more details in September! #NationalInternDay

Kansas-based businesses still have the opportunity for up to a $1,000 grant through Parker Dewey if they hire a Kansas-based student intern. ---- We know of three local businesses that took advantage of these grant funds last semester. If you'd like to know more about the grant funds, the micro-internships, the hosting site/company Parker Dewey - let me know and I can share what I know and/or connect you to the employers who hosted. ---- Mico-internships are an excellent way to 1) give students real-world opportunities/experience and 2) get those projects done that have been sitting on your 'shelf' because you are procrastinating OR those 'I'll get to it one day..." OR I don't know how to do XYZ.... Students are hungry for opportunities like this! ---- 👉One of the hosting employers shared that their mico-intern created content and graphics for an entire year for their social media page.... 👉Another shared that a website was built.... 👉The last had actionable next steps on a project they'd been stuck on - along with a strategic plan to get those things done in the next 1-year period. ---- The possibilities for you are endless.....and it's a win-win for all! #sekinterns #sekinternships #pittstateinternships

For most college students, an internship is the most important step they can take as an undergrad to prepare for entering the workforce after graduating. Our research has shown over and over that internships lead to increased skills, expanded professional networks, and enhanced social capital. This is especially true of paid internships, which allow students to complete professional tasks and gain real-world experience. With this in mind, NACE encourages employers to pay their interns and encourages legislators to work to provide support for employers in converting unpaid internships to paid internships. https://lnkd.in/g-FwE2s8 #NationalInternDay

For #internationalinternday, it is important to remember equity in pay. NACE has done wonderful research showing that paid interns are most successful in the job market, at nearly 2x the hire rate as students who don't go into internships while they are in college/university. Paid internships open doors for students and employers.
