A recent Mercer survey of nearly 700 organizations reveals that employers plan to maintain their current health benefits through 2025, even as per-employee costs rose about 5.2% in 2023 and 2024. Employers are also expanding support for specialized coverage, including reproductive health and weight-loss medications. Interestingly, companies are divided on how to manage these rising costs: 45% might shift costs to employees, while 47% are considering alternative strategies like high-performance networks and enhanced clinical case management. Product and benefit design for Medicare Advantage plans has always been focused on growth and the need to secure market share. The challenge with this approach, and CMS reinforces this stance, is that supplemental benefits are being underutilized or showing a clear impact and return on investment. Why? They are often not tied to a targeted population’s health outcomes. The rule outlines that health plans must expand their focus, adding value and impact to their criteria for measuring success of their products and benefits. Today, the lack of population health-driven benefit design strategies and targeted interventions makes these health plan products commoditized table stakes, not meaningful programs that will result in improved care and outcomes.    Jukebox Health believes, and we’re seeing this as a trend in the conversations we’re having, that there is real opportunity found in building highly targeted and population health-focused benefits. Health plans can see a decrease in the cost of care and an increase in positive health outcomes by designing more benefits that deliver interventions to cohorts rather than the entire membership. For instance, take the concept of Fall Prevention and Aging in Place– those benefits should be targeted to people who have a history of falls, are prone to environmental hazards, and have chronic conditions that make it difficult for them to remain in their homes safely and independently. A key strategy to improving health outcomes lies in the reassessment of the benefits offered by health plans and to whom these benefits are offered to. Some good news, and some bad news from the lastest employer sponsored health benefits cost survey from Mercer. Good news: - Mercer predicts a 5.4% increase in #healthbenefits costs as compared to PWC predicting >7.0% back in June 📉 - Employers are eating a good chunk of the increase and not passing it on to the employees (thank you 😁 ) - Employers are looking for navigation solutions to help curb complex care costs (if this is you, check out Collective Health's Care Navigation service 😎 ) Bad news: - The costs are still increasing, with no end in sight 😱 #healthcarecosts #advocacy

Benefit survey data from Mercer confirms a trend we’re seeing: Most employers are maintaining and looking to expand benefits this year, while they simultaneously try not to exacerbate financial strain on their employees. The data showed they’re placing an emphasis on reproductive health and weight-loss programs, and Premise Health has seen increased interest in #AdvancedPrimaryCare, pharmacy, and care management and navigation. Back in April, I wrote in Forbes about why employee utilization of their benefits is paramount to better health and wellbeing. Now is the time to listen to employees’ needs, drive access to primary and preventive care first, and make it easy for people to understand. Why shouldn’t doing the right thing be rewarded with better experiences, lower costs, and greater outcomes?
