Democracy in... is a podcast that explores what democracy looks and feels like in different countries. Guess who represented Italy? Yours truly! Thanks to host Mary Leighton for making me feel comfortable speaking about something rather obscure to me, and thank you to fellow guest Piero Q P Carlucci for knowing everything I don't! Here's part 1 of the episode, part 2 follows: https://lnkd.in/eZeUzrri In part one we talk about how everyday voters navigate elections, given Italy's infamously complicated system of coalition politics and proportional representation. And we get a fresh perspective on an question this podcast has never quite been able to answer: what makes a ceremonial President any different from a Monarch? In Part Two Piero describes how Italy has fought back against the corrupting influence of organized crime on politics. And computer scientist Federica adds her expertise to the electronic vs. paper voting debate. We also hear about traditional forms of cooperative and democratic organization in Italian society that continue despite the breakdown in trust in national-level politics.

On this week's episode of Next Round podcast, David W. Higgins and I chat about how the UK general election campaign has been unfolding; national service is the big Tory policy offering to the young electorate. The UK Labour Party picks up significant business support. We look at how this compared to Sinn Féin in Ireland, which has traditionally lacked such support. Ireland’s far-right is a real movement, but the local elections might reveal it to be a movement absent from the doorsteps. We discuss this and the European elections which show increased support for right-of-government candidates. Finally, how can we all participate in stock markets? Ireland has a low participation rate relative to other countries (especially the US). Even in the US, stock ownership is tilted towards the top 1%.

🇺🇸🚨The U.S. migratory policy focus should no longer be on ineffective policies of deterrence and enforcement. 🗳️As we approach a 2024 election year with #migration becoming a higher priority for voters in the United States, we must remember that “it’s a long-term game that certainly doesn’t fit on a bumper sticker for political campaigns,” as explained by WOLA's Vice President for Programs Maureen Meyer in our latest #podcast. 🎧Listen: https://lnkd.in/emsnHyCR

We're all pretty bored with the #election coverage aren't we! So, tomorrow will see the voting start and by Friday morning, a new government in place, but how will YOU vote this time around? Whilst most of us want and expect a change from the lies, corruption and misogyny of the last 14 years, is #Labour really the answer or just more of the same? The problem I believe, lays at the heart of whip-controlled 2-party politics, so only a vote for REAL change can possibly provide a solution. That is why I will be voting for Abi McGuire our local #independent candidate tomorrow. There are over 450 independents standing across the UK and it has been nicknamed #IndependentsDay as a result! It's NOT a 'wasted vote' in my opinion, it's a vote for for change and to let the political parties all know, we want an end to party based politics and to re-educate people who just vote for London based figureheads, rather than someone who truly wants to fight for their constituents. On Sunday, July 28th, Venezuela's democracy faced another blow as fraudulent elections declared Nicolás Maduro president once again. The devastating consequences of this loss of democracy are evident as Venezuelan citizens continue to endure rampant violence, poverty, corruption, and a relentless erosion of basic human rights. This situation has become a significant international crisis, with over 7 million refugees and migrants fleeing Venezuela, marking the largest exodus in Latin America and one of the largest globally. Today, I write this post to help raise awareness about the critical situation in my country. Now more than ever, international support is crucial to protect the rights and lives of Venezuela's citizens.
🇻🇪 🎧 As Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) continues to monitor the ongoing unrest in #Venezuela, listen to our latest podcast episode of Latin America Today in which Laura Cristina Dib Ayesta and Adam Isacson discuss the current state of the country and what is at stake for the Venezuelan people and for the international community. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ehpYMKWa
